Looks like a cap for some sort of pipe!! Is the top knob seperate? If so can you slacken it and see what it actually is capping off. Meaning does water seep out can you smell gas e.t.c. Second thoughts leave it be, you may be in trouble if it wont tighten again :lol:

Yeah the boiler is at the highest point, and I have got water to the boiler as the hot water circuit is up and running! But the heating sytem will not budge off 0 bar on the pressure gauge???!!!

Have installed a combi in a loft area. The hot water pressure to all taps is acceptable. The only trouble is filling the heating system!! Not enough pressure to fill to the required 1 bar. Any help will be greatly received???

Use the wood!! But you can also use a small pilot drill, to go around the recessed tap hole drilling holes fairly close, and then its easier to tap out. Use the wood to support the side of the sink you use, as the drill may burst out causing damage!!
