    Another installation testing issue

So, having completed the replacement of the mcb in my consumer unit with RCBO's I cracked on with testing and hit an issue with the lighting circuit. Everything tests out fine - with the exception of the Line-Neutral IR test, which tests out as 0MOhm at 250V. Doing a continuity measurement...

Bathroom extractor Fan.... Should it run continuously when light is On ?

It really bugs me to have a fan that comes on when you turn the bathroom light on for much the same reason Mottie outlines. I'll add another one too - when relaxing in a bath with the lights dimmed having the fan run all the time really grates. So, when i had the bathroom done i had the...

    Replace MCB with RCBO's

Well, it took me most of an afternoon and into the early evening, but i got it done. Surprisingly hardwork getting it all to fit. Not helped by the CU being quite shallow in depth, and there not being a lot of space behind the RCBO's once fitted - hence having to run the functional earths over...

Whats the quietest inline bathroom fan with humidistat

I spent a long time looking for quiet inline duct fans a few years back and eventually settled on Soler & Palau. Their TD silent fans are pretty much as quiet as you can get for quite high volumetric flow. Mine is fitted just outside the bathroom, so I get a fair amount of run noise, but unlike...

Tie in of DPM sheet to plastered wall

Tie in of DPM sheet to plastered wall

I'm looking at using DPM sheet before laying insulation and floating subfloor on an existing concrete floor. What's best practice for tying in the DPM sheet to the wall ? Can i stick it to the current floor level painted plaster, or am i better off cutting the plaster back, say to 50mm...

    Installation test results

And the next problem was my final ring. Initial testing indicated a difference in L-L and N-N continuity (0.45Ohm vs 0.38 Ohm) that i wasn't happy with, and CPC continuity that again seemed way to high - though having resolved the earlier issue, i surmised this would change. I've managed to...

    Installation test results

Well, I finally managed to carve out some more time when i can switch everything off and had a go at working out what was happening with my flying lead. Long story short - i was testing the wrong CPC. Not quite sure how i was getting continuity before, but with the help of the flying lead i...

Failed EICR-is is justifiable to change RCD box(fuse box)

If its one thing i've learnt by spending time reading the posts on this forum it's that whilst on the face of it domestic electrics are quite straight forward, the reality is that it's anything but - when you start digging into things, the rabbit hole goes deep - hence the 'am i missing...

Failed EICR-is is justifiable to change RCD box(fuse box)

Having read this thread with interest, and looked at the OP's EICR - isn't the PFC figure at the top of the second page also wrong ? I make the PFC 1.44KA for a Ze of 0.16 on 230V supply (230/0.16 = 1437). or am i missing something?

    Installation test results

Thanks all. good to confirm that what i measured was way out of whack and needs investigating further. When i wrote L-E & N-E those were the series measurements of L&N with CPC. I linked them out using a Wago221 in the backbox of the immersion isolator & measured at the ends in the CU...

So, I make that approx 1.5 if going from 1.5mm to 1mm. Doesn't make much difference as my CPC continuity seem to be > x10.

    Installation test results

I'll have to measure when i next open up the CU but I seem to recall that in this particular 1969 / 1970 install the cpc is smaller than the live conductors

    Installation test results

So, as discussed in an earlier thread i've been doing some installation testing before swapping out my MCB's for RCBO's. In general, everything is testing out ok - though i did find one overheating crimp joint in one of my 16A heating radials that was put in by the spark who replaced my...

    I hate to think...

Reminds me of what someone (a supposedly highly educated scientist / engineer, though it could have been a student being trained and under their superision) did at the lab where i used to work. Some labs had UPS backed power supplies denoted by red faceplaces, along with the normal non-backed...

Do main cut-out fuses age ?

Thanks all. my take on it all is that yes, they do age but you just leave them be until / if /when they do pop. My initial thinking was that age would be the main factor in deteriorating performance, without thinking through the causes. if i'd thought about it a bit more, i would have got to...

Do main cut-out fuses age ?

In posting a comment to another thread, i mentioned that i think the main cut-out fuse on my install is probably the original from ~1970 or about 50 years old by now. which got me to thinking - does the time-current characteristic curve degrade with time? The only BS1361 chart i have been...

    House Amp calculator

I live in an all electric flat and fitted some energy monitoring kit (OpenEnergy EmonPi ) about this time last year. My rough estimate by adding up the power ratings of electrical devices in my flat (heating, hot water, oven, hob, kitchen appliances, assorted IT kit, home cinema etc) it ends up...
