Simple practical question .... I think

Yes I'd studied those, but the layout puts the switch (which is near the CU) a long way from the two lights (which are off in different directions). It would mean running a long cable to one of the lights from the switch, which I was hoping to avoid.

Simple practical question .... I think

Hi all I'm installing a lighting circuit in some (already present) 25x16mm rectangular plastic trunking (the sort with a snap-on cover) fitted high on my garage wall. What's the neatest, simplest and safest way to make cable connections? (e.g. to add cable down to switch etc) Coming out of...

    radial cicuits

All good stuff (thanks for the link, Ban) and that's kind of as I understood it; it's the areas in sq. metres that are doing for me. Where do they come in? Sorry, I guess I'm being dense (not for the 1st time) :? EDIT: Oh, maybe I see ..... the amount of floor area served with sockets...

    radial cicuits

'Diversity' gets mentioned a lot around here and I'm not convinced I understand it. No, hang on, I AM convinced that I DON'T understand it. Any chance of a potted definition/layman's guide? MTIA

Hey AdamW, nice to hear from another bass player! Though most of the drummers of my experience seem to suffer more from percussion daftness ...... :P

    Mains Smoke alarms

My g/f and I went to her brother's wedding last weekend. In his speech he (bravely, I thought) made reference to his new wife's culinary skills: "I need to teach her that the smoke alarm is not a kitchen timer" :) and "We want to move towards 'cordon bleu' rather than 'cordoned...

All sad and all true. :( I guess (sorry, I mean 'I suppose') we have to accept that most of the English-speaking world now speaks American, or US-English, or whatever-the-**** it's called. Strangely, the Spanish language has the same issue. (I'm learning it as a hobby). The vast...

    shower overheating at consumer unit!!!

Trouble is, for those of us who work at something else all day/week, the 'sheds' are the only places open (at 8pm, or on Sundays etc) The internet is useful (screwfix etc) but sometimes you want to actually pick stuff up and look at it to decide whether it'll do ... Ah well.... :(

    shower overheating at consumer unit!!!

That's an interesting graph! I knew wired fuses ran well above their rating but I never realised they were that tolerant ..... thanks for posting that Ban PS WHY would you want to ban all sheds? :?

    Round holes in glass

It's a small pane in a Crittall (spelling?) type of window - there is a pane there now but I can make another to replace it (here's one I made earlier) I think you're right though, I'll probably let the specialist do it

    shower overheating at consumer unit!!!

Just about. Use the calculator at http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Charts/VoltageDrop.html. What's more concerning is why the 30A fuse isn't blowing - 10.8kW at 240V is over 40A. And for a shower installation you should have an RCD ....

    alarms (GCSE)

Go to www.babanibooks.com - these great little paperbacks only cost about six or seven quid and are full of circuit examples etc, all simple and well explained - for example book BP416 is on on alarm projects, and I think there's also a book on 555 timer projects too. You can get them (probably...

    shower overheating at consumer unit!!!

If the new shower is more powerful than the old, the supply current will be higher. Is the wiring sufficiently beefy to take the current? Is the wiring connection well made at the CU? (there's a calculator somewhere on this forum which will calculate the required wire thibkness for a...
