    Chicken Coop

For the roof you would be better off using onduline or something similar, and not felt. When you get red mite under the felt you'll never get rid of them. Don't under estimate the problem of red mite. The whole house should be designed so there is nowhere for the mite to hide, the least...

    cut rafter roofs

The easiest way to understand this is to draw it. Use a protractor and draw a 40 degree angle then draw a perpendicular line at a right angle to the horizontal line. The resulting angle at the top will be 50 degrees. The pitch of a roof is the angle between the slope of the roof and the...

    Bad brickwork? pictures.

I don't understand some of these people, I do some work in London and work is definately starting to get a bit tight, they need to stop taking the p**s out of people who are giving them a wage. The good thing about the work drying up is, it does get rid of a lot of slackers. It's a shame a...

    Bad brickwork? pictures.

Twenty odd years ago I worked on the National Physical Laboratories in Twickenham, it was a very intense bricklaying job. On my first day I had two warnings for going too fast, I thought they were joking but the foreman said other brickies were trying to keep up and getting speed wobbles. They...

Should Maggie Thatcher get a State funeral.

I did read that they only had a 5 exocets and were desperately trying to get hold of more. Another thing I heard was French engineers were based in Argentina during the war because the Argies were having trouble with the plane based launch system.

Should Maggie Thatcher get a State funeral.

There was no declaration of war from the UK because there were hopes for a diplomatic solution. Once you've declared war it's harder to pull back.

Should Maggie Thatcher get a State funeral.

Prehaps not that well informed if she thought the Belgrano wasn't a threat.

Should Maggie Thatcher get a State funeral.

She is given credit for the defeat of the Argentinians, that's mainly why the Tories won the next election. She didn't defeat them, the military did. The Government were advised by the military, they done the strategic planning, all the War Cabinet done was ok things. I think the only thing...

Is it time to reopen the coal mines?

In the UK we have hundreds of years supply of coal. That's too much potential energy to just leave in the ground, but it's all about the cost of getting it out of the ground. Opencast mining is obviously the cheapest but not always possible, thus the need for drift mines or deep mines. So...

    Electrified fences

Yes. The electric fence even crossed the path with two metal posts and a small gap between them..... had to lift the buggy over to get to the stile. When a fence crosses a footpath there has to be a non electrified gate with warning signs either side. A big no no is an electrified fence...

    Electrified fences

I seem to remember that it's a legal requirement to have warning signs no more than 100m apart where the public may have access. One get out is the distance the fence is set back from the footpath or whatever. PS They do give a good belt don't they, very good for keeping out the riff raff

    Electrified fences

The nylon dosen't carry any current, take a closer look and you'll see the metal strand entwined in the nylon. As for signs they should be put up where the fence runs along a public footpath or highway.

Can we put a bathroom in our loft conversion?

Beth Although you have retrospective planning you may find that the existing loft will need a lot of work to bring it up to scratch. I've just finished a loft conversion that did have existing rooms in the loft. It needed new floor joists throughout, the existing floor seemed solid but it...

    The Charlotte Church Show....

A couple of years ago, Gavin left his phone in a pub. The next day I think nearly every bloke in the valleys had seen his private pics of Charlotte.

    Car reliability.

Just got rid of our Toyota Rav. Had it eight and a half years, the only problem we had, the heater fan went in the first couple of months. It had done 110,000 miles and still had the original exhaust. We only got rid of it as we needed more seats, I'll definately get another one when they bring...

    Weep Vents

I would like to add my views on this, and these are based on observation and personal experience. I have seen water ingress at plate level, through an outlet in a parapet wall. It was bad workmanship in that the hopper was to high and when the pipe blocked, the hopper filled and water run...

    cut rafter roofs

Noseall I bet you slept in the geometry classes at school. On a right angled triangle, if the angle between base and hypotenuse is 40 degrees then the angle between perpendicular and hypotenuse is 50 degrees. They add up to 90 degrees.

    cut rafter roofs

It depends on how precise you want to be. The depth of the birdsmouth can affect the pitch, but then a rise or dip in the plate will also affect the pitch. Are all your timbers the same width, are the plates perfectly parallel. At the end of the day it' a garage roof. I've just finished a loft...
