Plenty of low level consumer units now, in cupboards under the stairs.

    Consumer unit/meter height

On EAL course we were told the height of the cu didn't come under part m, only switches and sockets in habitable rooms on domestic new builds. Though an isolation switch should be provided at an accessable height. I don't know if anyone really knows the answer to this one.

    Anybody had/fitted 'Suntile' or 'Skytunnel'?

Put one in about two years ago, claimed to be equivilant to 100w light or something like that, no chance. They do let the light in but nothing like the photos, I suppose they are the ones with the built in light. I suppose it depends how badly you need light. In the early 80s in the NEC met an...

    Drains

The best way to clear an interceptor is with a marigold glove and a bucket. Definately not be the most pleasant though.

    Wide Footings

The usual way for me is 4in inner skin, cavity then block on flat for plinth and external skin. Like noseall said you look at the 45 deg. Your foundation can be above the bottom of next doors foundation by the distance between them. If you've been told to go down 2m , it could be a deep...

Kitchen / Utility into one ? * Pics Included *

Most beams are put in for a reason, you'll probably find that there are joists sitting on yours. As big-all said check the floorboards. It may be the case that the beam was original and the wall was built under it at a later date, you may be able to take out the wall and leave an exposed beam...

    loft structural strength

If the walls below are load bearing, then build up the wall running with the joists with some bricks then run your timbers off this wall and onto joist hangers fitted on the party wall. You can take out a bit of a bed and use masonary hangers or drill and plug jiffy hangers.

Drilling through the top of a wall

Ducts have to be vented separately and as noseall said watch the long runs. I try to stick with 3m max.

    Penalty clauses in contracts

'Penalty clause' is not the correct term but in the building game that's how we see them, so that's what we call them. In a JCT contract it will be down as 'Liquidated damages' but calling a dog a cat will not stop it barking. From my understanding, courts will uphold liquidated damages as...

    Penalty clauses in contracts

Gaz I use JCT contracts all the time. I always work through an architect, who sorts out the JCT. On a contract of 100k my penalty clause would be £100 per week, though I have had £40 per day. There would be no bonus for completing early, why should there be. I should be able to progam the...

    Trickle chargers

Neo I thought I might be ok if I left a 60w light on all day as it's only a 1.5w charger. What do you think? But really I built it originally to be a dojo so I made sure there was plenty of daylight. Quite hot on sunny days.

    Trickle chargers

Thanks for the replies. What it is I've got an mx5 that spends most of its time in the garage, it's been in there now for about 3 months, and the battery's gone flat now. So maybe this will be a useful present. I remember these things appearing years ago but I've never heard much about them...
