You're probably right about the antique wiring! A re-wire is on the cards, but on hold until funds allow, so this installation should be viewed as temporary, however I still want to make it as safe as possible under the circumstances. Thanks for the advice :)

Breeze blocks - really? Are there certain types or dimensions that would be more suited? They wouldn't be embedded as deeply as poured footings, surely? Presumably the same prep approach would work - i.e. compacted gravel at the bottom of hole?
