    Pitched roof insulation & condensation

I am of the understanding that although lots of these membranes are sold as 'breather membranes' that there are only 2 fully breathable membranes on the market ie; those that do not require any ventilation whatsoever. Roofshield is one of these, I believe that the other is one of the Tyvek...

thermalite, celcon, durox and now fibolite blocks?

Fibolites have been around for a long time now...used more up North I gather, but there is a place in Bristol that manufacture something similar called a fibotherm. Slightly heavier, but hardly, no problems with fixings, in fact i've worked for a few guys down here that prefer them to...

    Renting a unit.

Good luck mate - I admire your ambition to expand and do things others don't. I'm not sure if an office presence is that effective for a building firm, but you never know? Keep at it. I've got a lock up, but its mainly for excess materials, there's no office space there whatsoever.

    Trade Associations

Do any of you builders on here value teh association of a trade body? NHBC or FMB or such like. I've heard a lot of horror stories but also some good ones....I just wondered if it was worth applying for one or either as my business expands. Would welcome constructive thoughts.

    Builder overcharging?

I've just had a customer tell me that the price I quoted for the build of a shell of a house, now doesn't meet his original estimate for the project. He owes me the best part of £20,000. Customers always hold the Aces because they hold the purse strings. Needless to say this chap doesn't...

    Insulating studwork

Its not psychological buddy, it genuinely works! Try the seconds website people have mentioned on here. I tend to provide new stuff as I warrantee all of my work, but by all accounts the seconds website is pretty good. Kingspan and Celotex are the market leaders but I believe that most...

    Insulating studwork

If it's pure insulation go with PIR board. More of a pain to install but much better results.

    Insulating studwork

No worries mate - my advice would not be to go with the cheapest, but the most appropriate.

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

Can I just add a well done mate. I'm sure some of us may have questions over some of your processes or methods etc. But ultimately this is a site for DIYers and you've done a good job of DIY Project Managing your own extension and it looks fine. You've probably saved a bunch of money, and if...

    Insulating studwork

It largely depends on what you want to achieve, however, Rockwool Multi has good all round qualities for acoustic, thermal and fire.

    Installing Underground Drainage

I don't remember the science behind it, but I was told that fairy liquid wasn't too good for rubber over time, and silicone spray isn't prohibitively expensive, especially when you buy it in amongst an extension budget.

    small lintel in block wall

A PCC lintel at about 1.2m will only weigh about 12kg's i'm sure you'll manage that!!

    30 tonnes soil

as above mate - they'll recycle that - 2 lorries max - shop around for the best price though, they can vary wildly. In Bristol they can vary by up to £60 per load if you don't buy regularly. If you catch someone on a quiet day, you'll get a better price.
