    Cast iron guttering

Yeah it`s an OG cast iron by the sounds of it. If you can`t afford the cast iron you can get pressed ally.... cast ally.... or grp in the same size and design usually. Take a sample of old gutter to a good merchants. These types are usuall referred to as 4x3 or 5x4..ie height x width. Don`t...

    Leaking chimney...

Chimney looks open at right side of brickwork. People always assume water is coming from top opening on can ..it rarely does. Get whoever is doing it to verify the soundness of your flashing and to make sure it is chased back in to proper depth....and fixed. Then get chimney and flashing...

    Difference between rendering and plastering

It`s just as the guys describe . The only exception I`ve seen to it is in Ireland. Over there in a lot of new and old builds they mortar render the inside walls then finish them with plaster which is strange to us in UK. This may be where you have heard it mentioned. Alex

    external insulation and rendering

You mentioned the Sand. It should be well washed and should be on the slightly coarser grade of building sand...but not as sharp as concrete. It is actually called plaster sand. As long as it is washed it will be ok...no coal or staining minerals.......well maybe GOLD  An ordinary...

    external insulation and rendering

You don`t have that many options unless you buy a "system" from a manufacture. You would also need a plasterer to get good results. You have returns arrises ingoes all to consider. Polystyrene like Kingspan wont be exposed to vermin if it`s behind the lathe and render? Maybe it`s...

    Garden wall

I only dabble in brickwork mate. If founds are good I would think a 9inch wall would be stable at 5ft high if there is no soil pressure behind it. You could build on top. Dig out a small section and reveal the footing first. It has to be decent or could move then wall is unstable and...

What kind of render is this?

You know in Ireland they throw some quaint stuff on their walls. Huge chips and an open cast with a lot of the background mortar exposed. First time I saw it I thought someone had attempted it unwittingly . Then I saw it again and again through many towns far apart. Alex
