Help needed with a stange electric problem!

Sounds like the downstairs switch, being neither in the on or off position has internally switched off the upstairs light, but the contacts have not changed over to "pass power" to the upstairs switch to allow it to switch the light. Paul

Cannot, or recommended not to? Mine went in ok. So you can, but prehaps its not the "best solution" Paul

    Central Heating programmer

Andrew, They are a doddle to fit. I cannot comment if the wiring is the same, as it depends on what you have currently, but mine was pretty much like for like - used 2 wires of the 3 present (one was used on the original original stat - and was a supply for the internal "heater" - this had...

    Central Heating programmer

Andrew, I have fitted one of these 7 day programmable room stats, and they are brilliant. My CH is on 24hours at the programmer - and at the stat - different temp settings for different times of the day. eg night from 0001-0415 18 deg, morning 0415-0830 20 deg, weekday "day" 0830-1630 19 deg...

    Dimmer switch for bathroom

I used the pull cord dimmer from TLC connected to a dimmable transformer, and then to 4 lv downlighters (ip65). It also has a line to trigger a timed extractor fan. Paul

Skirting boards : Fixing vs affixing

I used Gripfill and "lost head" nails every metre or so, then caulked the board top edges and nail holes in. Invisible fixing! Paul

    Noisy radiator

smpearman, You don't mention when this problem started. Have you recently installed the TRV's or upped the pump speed setting?? I had this on my dining room Rad when I fitted TRV's throughout the house (except the Hall "control" radiator). The plank that I am - I fitted this one at the...

    Power flush problems

Masona That should stop the chemical from entering the HW heating circuit nicely. I only wish I had done that with my brothers system :( Although I guess that joint would have "gone" eventually.... paul

    Power flush problems

Masona, I had the same when I used a chemical cleaner on my brothers flat. I introduced the fluid into the CH header tank, then ran the CH/HW system for 1 hour on full heat (per the instructions). The blockage was broken down a treat by the chemical, and the "cold" rad started working lovely...

Many Thanks - 3 way light wiring

Just wanted to say a big thanks to all here for advice for wiring a third switch into a hall/landing circuit. I knew the theory, but not the name of the specific type of switch (intermediate). Job done (fun wiring 8 wires into the back of an existing pair of 2 way switches!) and all works as...

Washing Machine turns off all electricity

Had this on my old WM. It would trip RCD on spin cycle with a "heavy" load. Traced defect to a chaffed wire in the WM. With a "heavy" or out of balance load (like a load of towels) in the WM, when it started to spin, the machine jumped about a bit, allowing chaffed portion of cable to ground...

    Most efficient heating method

Just gone through this same scenario myself. I installed a low level convector radiator connected to my central heating system, with a thermostatic inlet valve. I did this as I didn't want to spend more money on the electricity when I've got a system already running in the rest of the house...

    CONSERVATORY - DIY

I had my builders put my screwfix delux Victorian dwarf wall one up when they were around doing a big extension. Conserv was £3500 for 3m X 3m fromScrewfix Big stuff (inc delivery, but it does not include the bricks for the dwarf wall). Cost of laying base, supply and building cavity dwaft...

    noisy boiler

Dear Mr Hayes, I had a massive extension done on my house over the summer. CH was drained down and refilled a couple of times over the three month period. I had already bought some "Protex" CH system Protector, but didn't want to add it until I had added a conservatory radiator, some 4 months...

Where to Buy Intermediate Switch for a 3 switch set up

I have been trawing the web but cannot find anyone who lists the intermediate switch which one can add to a 2 way switch set up. Any suggestions (UK) I've tried RS Components, Screwfix, QVS at TLCarr but no luck. Seem rarer than Hens Teeth Many thanks Paul D Lane
