Steel pillars instead of engineering brick pier

Are you talking 5% 0r 10% on overall build cost? Then no, I imagine much less.....has your Architect given you a ball park estimate for the job as a whole?

Steel pillars instead of engineering brick pier

All I would say is that if you speak with your engineer about your concerns he will be able to design something appropriate - so long as he is a pragmatic engineer, they should be able to come up with something suitable, but it will cost, both in design and installation. So it will come back to...

Steel pillars instead of engineering brick pier

My thoughts would be that on a standard sized extension the costs of either of your methods would be fairly similar. So unless its a monster sized job, I would imagine the costs of doing the steel work should remain well within your budget.

    Full refurb quote fair?

Sounds too cheap - you would want to make sure that you fully reference check their work. I would suggest a visual inspection not just a telephone reference.

    who's responsibility

I would expect my plumber to take the first fix waste to the general location of the sink but for my kitchen fitter to do the final connections.

    Sub base in two layers

Good work chap, looks nice and tidy for DIY - its a shame when digger drivers get carried away.

    Change of van

I've got the TRansit T350 - love it - parts and servicing seem reasonably cheap which i'm assuming is down to the relatively commonplace nature of the Ford Transit. Would recommend it.

    Accidents....

Wow - there was a pretty decent accident on one of the sites we're on Yesterday - nearly lost my life. I don't subbie for many people, but there are a couple I usually do blockwork shells for......yesterday we were trying to cut the gables in, they decided it was a good idea to have 4...

morter too grey colour for pointing

Woody is right, you'll need to do a test panel on the wall itself, also, have you tried white cement?

    2 storey planning question

Although the case in a lot of council's, North Bristol which now falls under South Glos Council, this is certainly not the case and we built a number of extensions there last year that were not subservient at all. No harm in asking the question....

£2000 patio roof extending. Is this possible.

I think this needs more description as what you are proposing sounds a little bizarre....

    Preferred construction docs

Option 2 is preferable. But also bear in mind a lot of builders still don't seem to print in A3 let alone A1

    Using an Estimating Service

Although i'm inclined to agree with woody, and your response seems to validate his statement......but in answer to your original question, Travis's estimating department is USELESS. I used it to price check against us in the past and they were way out, they missed stacks of the process out and...

    Ready mix mortar suggestions please.

You shouldn't be able to get ready mix wrong mate - its only question of adding water!

    Eco-Joists- anyone here used them?

They're better for the bigger spans, I still stick with traditional timber for shorter lengths - they're very easy to use. From memory they come with a small amount of tolerance on either end of the beams so that you don;t end up cutting the web when trimming - nice and light.

1YR Old Patio destroyed by the frost HELP needed!!

This is the point - water that does penetrate, will keep going, the water the falls off of the top will be the problem

1YR Old Patio destroyed by the frost HELP needed!!

I dont see the problem as water penetration and then coming forwards - I see it as running off the top of the patio and down the face of the bricks. Hanson will probably tell you that the lack of drip is the cause and effect of the spalling, and too be fair, they'll have a case. The slabs...
