    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

In the real world, no other window company asks for 50% up front. I have someone else fitting them now and I'm glad. I have since learned that the other guy is not what he seems any more, and things are not as they should be. I am just thankful that I made the right decision, and relieved! I...

positioning of extractor fan in bathroom

With tile vents, in a lot of cases you can get a replica of your existing tiles, either from the manufacturer, or a general one. Then it's just a case of taking a tile off and replacing with the vented one. You can also get a Lapvent, which is like a vented tile in that it vents out through the...

No worries, thanks for your post. I have someone else in mind, soon have it sorted I hope. :D

Yes, I'd pay...say a 25% deposit, don't think that's unreasonable, but he won't budge from almost 50%, as I've already said a couple of times. Yes, I am prepared to pay more if necessary from someone else, to remove the risk of an up front payment which is so high. The porch is already there...

    Intermittent freeview signal

Freeview is still in it's infancy, and freezing and crashing boxes is normal and common. Try another make of Freeview box as an experiment, you will most likely find it behaves differently. Also, go into the box's menu and have a look at signal strengths and quality. See if there's anything to...

I think B-A-S has got it right with his previous post, and I think everyone would echo this - 'My mum has had a few small building jobs done by a local company, been in business for years, good WOM rep etc, and he told her never EVER pay for anything which has not been done or delivered...

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

Hi Softus, thanks for your post, to answer your points - 1. She shouldn't HAVE to have an answer, it was just awkwardly strange. That's all. 2. Surely every tradesman in every trade takes a risk when they buy materials. Isn't that normal? Although the risk is low in my case, I've had lots...

What a silly post :D Would YOU pay £1300 pro-forma to a window company. No, thought not.

Thanks for your post and advice. It seems you're in the same mindset as I am. The window guy never asked for pro-forma payments before, but I would have paid a reasonable deposit no problem. But he won't budge. So I'm looking elsewhere and in fact have had someone else round tonight. Cheers.

I already have. Yeah, like YOU'D pay £1300 up front. :D  :D :D

Thanks for your replies. I think, and everyone else it seems is of the same opinion, that £1300 is simply too much to ask someone to pay up front, for a job to be done. The last poster mentioned being scared to hell, and I have to agree with that term, it's an awful big up front payment, but...

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

I see your points there, but I am not their customer, the Window guy is. I would prefer to go direct to them and become the customer and pay direct. Except that I wouldn't get them at the trade price that he will be, so it wouldn't be worth it. If I was to hand over the cheque, and the windows...

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

If I went into a contract with someone to have work done and they ordered materials, and I backed out, I would expect to be either taken to court or beaten up. Or both. But then again it's not something that I have ever done, or would do. But what guarantee does any tradesman have with any job...

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

Jeeeezzz, it sounds like you've been having a bad day, either that or you have a series of bad payers behind you, and there's usually a reason for that, customer's unhappy, bad workmanship, etc. but I wouldn't like to make assumptions about your character, but then again, you are. Yes, a...

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't pay £1300 pro-forma to have a job done. Neither would you. Yes, it's obvious I'm going elsewhere to get the job done.

Some manufacturers fit their own yes, not sure if these do, I'd have to check, but that'd be just the same as starting anew. I might as well start from scratch, if they've got to come out, measure up, go away and make them, come back and fit them, then where's the actual saving in time or...

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

It's just an example of one of the things that could go wrong. Would you give someone £1300 to order something that someone else (who you now don't trust) has measured. And I'm no expert window fitter so don't feel confident doing it myself, it's far from a straighforward square window job.

I've had loads of work done previously, by various companies, extension, windows, new roof, etc. I've never been asked to pay up front before. Far too risky. Yes, I will be asking around for more quotes.

My thoughts exactly. Who in the right frame of mind would pay £1300 to have building/windows work done, before the job is started?

Again, it's open to pitfalls that I think. If the windows come in wrong size for example, due to installer having measured them wrong, I'd have paid for useless windows.
