    Extension wall with partial earth

This I believe is similar to the detail i mentioned above and as suggested by BCO.

    Foundation height issue

I’ll check with my structural engineer who specified 600x1000, but I can already anticipate his answer. Build it to his specification ... I’m half considering just asking the builder to order less concrete and let him pocket the difference...

    Foundation height issue

Yes, had BCO visit, they are fine with the depth of trench, next visit DPM ...

    Foundation height issue

I thought that, so long as it’s 1m deep, due to it being clay, and obviously building regs requirements, the foundation itself doesn’t have to be fully filled to 1m. But when I asked the builder if he can reduce the thickness of the trench fill so that it is not 1m deep of concrete, however his...

    Foundation height issue

Guys, sorry for creating a new post about foundation hight. However I am feeling uneasy about the height of the foundations which will be poured on Monday. I am looking to get a suspended timber floor installed so that the floor is the same throughout the house and thus allows passage of air...

    Extension wall with partial earth

Understandably BCOs designs are not necessarily correct, however if BCO are happy to pass what they suggested, I suppose I have to take that route? At a later stage, I’ll cut back the concrete slab on the raised garden, excavate and install a waterproof membrane on the exterior wall, followed...

    Extension wall with partial earth

Any advice with regards to the tanking detail? My original idea was to apply a coat of DPM paint to the exterior and use a tanking membrane in front of it. This goes up to the DPC on the outer leaf. BCO have suggested I apply a DPM paint on the cavity side of the outer leaf (in this case the...

House warming when it’s finally done!? :D

    Extension wall with partial earth

Btw, the wall is also C35 concrete. Along with the my foundations :D I’m going to be able to build a factory on this site. Or, when my house falls down my extension would still be live and kicking.

    Extension wall with partial earth

Hmm? Well building control said yes to this design. Sheet of mesh on the outside face of concrete and a sheet of mesh on the inside face of concrete, then cavity then inner leaf wall. First hiccup which cost me £1k...

    Extension wall with partial earth

Well, I was wrong. Seems we needed an engineer to design the wall in the end. Apparently 2 leafs of concrete blocks was insufficient to retain 800mm of Earth. Engineer ended up designing a 200mm thick reinforced concrete wall.

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

true, but surely practical experience would count towards the success of the job more so than a high paid guy in an ivory tower? understandably when "**** does hit the fan", I'm screwed anyway as all parties are going to find a way to remove their liability in this situation...

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

` yes, figured that much. engineer didn't mention anything about thermal bridging. None of the steels he has specified had any thermal considerations. I tried to locate some steel thermal breaks, but seems they are still very specialist. I was just going to wrap it up in PUR insulation and...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

We asked building control what they thought today whilst they was on site. They estimated 4 props, my builders estimated 5-6 props. We told him the SE estimated 24 props, and they were  Kinda shows huh?

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

A question for you guys who have seen or installed pad foundations. What’s the accuracy threshold you are generally happy with? We are sitting a 203mm column on a 350mm bearing plate on the 1200x950x500 reinforced pad. Engineer has specified its eccentric by 200mm from the centre away from the...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

Possibly, or he is over cautious due to the lack of experience? Well let’s see, I plan to double check with the guys on site and will probably be fitting the columns and beams in a weeks time hopefully. Let’s see how we go about it. We don’t plan to have the load on the acros for any more than...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

I get the feeling he’s playing liability management as with everyone else you generally pay for... so far his wage is by far the costliest per day. Looking up PD, seems I could fit the profile, which means I own all the risk... but then I hired a building service to do all the works, and he is...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

No, he’s just supplied all the designs with regards to specifying all the steels, connections, foundations etc. I guess looking at the HSE, I don’t have a principle designer?

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

Tony, what do you have above your RSJ? Is it supporting a 9” solid wall and roof? Just spoke to my structural engineer about our agreed plan of using strong boys to hold up the wall. Based on his assumption of the load and a Strongboy taking 300-400kg of weight. he thinks a safe way to do this...

    Cold flat roof

I've challenged my structural engineer and builder about using a warm roof. My builder - says there is no problem, other than it will cost more. My SE - has suggested designing the roof using 150mm timbers and 150mm UBs to hold a lantern instead of using 200mm timbers (2x8"). By reducing the...
