Heated towel rail not getting hot from immersion heater

Looks like it's time for me to break out MS Paint again , this time to ask a plumbing/heating question. We currently have the following setup for our hot water: Oil-fired (gravity-fed) Rayburn with hot water cylinder above (cylinder has an immersion heater). Water is supplied from cold...

    Mysterious beep..

That would probably be the best thing to do (and yes, I agree it would be interesting ), not least because it can sometimes be hard to tell (or maybe it's just me) what direction a sound is coming from, so a more 'scientific' way would likely be best. Assuming you'd have time, if the beep...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Yep the cable lower right is coming in from outside, through the doorframe as you say. And thanks for the extra info (I hadn't noticed myself that the left box was joined to the fuse!) To clarify: Looking at my other photos, I've just noticed... is that the split concentric coming into the...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Thanks! That led me to a quick internet search for "lighting arresters" (another new term for me) which then led me to find this: http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/large/old_bt.jpg ... which looks very similar to what we've got :)

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Hmmm... never expected that! I imagined that perhaps an older fuse box might have lived in the wooden box, perhaps before storage heaters were added and therefore the need for the extra CUs (but that's all just a guess on my part). I wonder if that's why there is one CU for storage...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

I'm learning so much here, thank you all for taking the time to answer my many queries, this really is a great place :) So if my main fuse is in the Henley Cut Out, does that take 'precedence' over the older fuse in the wooden box? What I mean by that is, will the old fuse essentially never...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Um oops, split concentric then :) (Both terms had been mentioned above, so I got confused) I don't actually know what that is ... all I know is it is connected to the incoming phone line so it's not a doorbell (it is 'outside' of the master phone socket). We have a wired doorbell...

    Mysterious beep..

How strange. Wonder how many others have had this phenomenon.

    Mysterious beep..

My first thought was a smoke alarm, but I'd be very surprised if that could be heard in a neighbouring house. Are you semi-detatched? Do you have a burglar alarm that could be on the blink maybe? Was there anything common in what you were doing each time you heard the beep, if that makes sense?

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Thanks... we screwed the cover back on once we'd had a look, so would that suffice (the cover is held on with two screws at the bottom) rather than a hinge? Perfectly possible Scottish Power didn't know it was there... after all we'd lived here for 4-odd years and we didn't know! (I was...

Adding round pin sockets to existing lighting circuit

So this will require access to the existing lighting and cannot be done by connecting to sockets and adding a 5amp fuse unit as per Andy's post #14?

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Hope you don't mind a few photos :) there's not a great deal of room in the understair cupboard so we couldn't get one shot with everything on all at once. Here's the Henley block - is this a fuse as well?: Beside it is the meter: Above those is the CU: Up in the corner we have a...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Thank you, good information there. I'm suspecting the whole thing was likely moved to the understair cupboard as there was more room there once more 'things' :) were needed. We do have a Henley block near our meter (well it has 'Henley' written on it and looks newer too) but I'm not sure if...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Nice. I love the history aspect of all this stuff. :) Good point about the paint marks actually... something else must've been there prior.

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

Thanks to all. Ok, a fuse, I see now. Still, any idea how old these would be? As I said, I'm very curious and want to know these things! :) I'm reading through the Electrics Wiki part of the forum to increase my knowledge but when it comes to specific 'what is this' questions it's hard to...

We finally opened the mysterious box in the hall...

... since we moved into our house about four years ago we've occasionally pondered what is underneath the painted wooden box high up in our front hall. Well, yesterday we finally took the plunge and unscrewed it, and this is what we found: It's possibly quite sad, but I will admit to...

Adding round pin sockets to existing lighting circuit

Haha yes! When I went to check the room before I made the diagram, I looked round and thought damn, that's not many sockets. Thing is we've been sort of doing up rooms at a time since we moved in a few years ago and that room has been used for storage and what-have-you so we kinda forgot about...

Adding round pin sockets to existing lighting circuit

Sorry, forgot to address that from your last post. The idea would be to have one (new) switch (beside the existing switch) operating all the 5A sockets, leaving the existing switch to operate the ceiling light. We haven't decided exactly where the new sockets would go but there would likely be...

Adding round pin sockets to existing lighting circuit

Thank you - those instructions make sense and seem perfectly do-able. That might be the way forward. Interesting, I've not heard of those before. I am more keen on proper wiring in but it's useful to know something like that exists.

Adding round pin sockets to existing lighting circuit

Yup just one grey cable coming out. The hole wasn't easy to see into but at first look with a torch we couldn't see a small junction box there (that doesn't mean there wasn't one just out of sight I suppose!) Floor boards would be much easier, as the room is uncarpeted at present (and good...
