Why not invest in a multimeter as has been said? And research on how to use it for your scenario. You can get them really cheap. And in any case, it would be cheaper than getting someone in, and you've got it for future use.

In John's case though, the lug has completely gone, it's not there. Drilling a hole and plugging through the backbox crossed my mind also. As well as supergluing a small block of wood to the back/side of the box, behind where the missing lug is, and screwing into that.

I can't see how anything would be better than bolting those extenders onto the old lug. Except for the tiny elf idea.

But how would you hold the new lug in place while you screw the face plate on? The pic I posted above - I think they come with nuts so they become fastened to the old lug.
