How to deal with a redundant socket?

A ring is just what it says - a ring. It needs to be, and should be closed. There can be various reasons why a spur might be added. An extra socket might have been needed at some stage by a previous owner for example, and it's perfectly normal to do this. Usually, if it has two cables it's part...

How to deal with a redundant socket?

You could either use a correctly rated terminal block to connect the cables together and use a blank face plate. Or I think you can get a blank face plate that has the terminals behind it, so it's like a plug socket with just a plain front, if you like. Either of the above will keep the ring...

    Light Switch

Why not invest in a multimeter as has been said? And research on how to use it for your scenario. You can get them really cheap. And in any case, it would be cheaper than getting someone in, and you've got it for future use.

    3.5mm nuts

In John's case though, the lug has completely gone, it's not there. Drilling a hole and plugging through the backbox crossed my mind also. As well as supergluing a small block of wood to the back/side of the box, behind where the missing lug is, and screwing into that.

    3.5mm nuts

I can't see how anything would be better than bolting those extenders onto the old lug. Except for the tiny elf idea.

    3.5mm nuts

But how would you hold the new lug in place while you screw the face plate on? The pic I posted above - I think they come with nuts so they become fastened to the old lug.

    Installing inline extractor fan

Make sure you get this confirmed by the pro's on here, but yes, your FCU in the loft is fine I think, as that's where the fan is. It's purpose is to isolate the power if the fan needs to be worked on, cleaned, whatever. As yours is an inline fan in the loft, then the FCU nearby, in the loft, is...

Could this shower room have an extractor fan?

An inline fan in the loft space might be best. You only need a 4" hole in the ceiling to take the vent, and there are various ways to achieve that. Is this not possible? Also, you can have windows fans in double glazed units. Also, what's above the door? Sometimes there is something like a...

Pendant Ligth Fitting - 6 Branch

Fitting into the plasterboard is usually fine, for all but heavier fittings, and there are a number of ways to do this from standard rawlplugs, to those stronger screw in type (there are plastic one's for electrical fittings), and those springclip toggle one's. There are a couple of ways to use...

    Fused spur and single socket

If your current FCU has a white surface mount back box, you can get double versions of those also, that will take two single front plates, e.g. an FCU and a socket.

    DIY Electrical Installation Work

Yes, you can still do your own DIY electrics as before. But now you are supposed to inform building control, (depending on what you are doing) who will come out and inspect it. For a nice fee. Although, it would seem that there is more than a reasonable chance that you know more about...

    Installing inline extractor fan

Are you not able to put a 3amp FCU before the pull cord switch? As it is an inline fan situated (I assume) in the loft, and the cable from the pull cord switch (again, I assume) will run in the loft, surely it's simple enough to put a 3amp FCU before the pull cord, the FCU will be situated close...

    Bathroom extractor problem

Usually, when a fan has a timer which you do not wish to use, you would connect the switched live terminal to the permanent live terminal with a small piece of live wire. The fan you have bought as a replacement - you need to make sure it is the same type as your old one, i.e. that it is a 12V...

    Washing Machine & Bathrooms

I would cut the plug off and connect it like before. Nothing wrong with doing that, plenty of people do it for various reasons, threading the cable behind a countertop, etc. Should the machine go wrong in the future, you could always wire a normal plug back on, the people at John Lewis and/or...

    Smoke alarm positions

And I think they have to be on the ceiling's highest point. i.e. if you have a ceiling on 2 levels, with a step, it has to be on the highest part. You'd be best to check with building control though, who may tell you to check with the alarm manufacturer, as mine did! And I think they have to...
