Best way to operate central heating?

Don't turn off any appliances without been able to check your gas installation for soundness, the gas isolation cocks may leak once disturbed and when you turn a light on in the morning the bill will become the least of your problems, which cloud to sit on will be instead.

    Pump Position

I wouldn't recommend it, not sure if it could handle two running outlets at the same time, and it will pump over into the storage cistern in loft via the open vent wasting hot water. Its just not designed for that purpose.

    Pump Position

I have seen this done, the shower pump is a stand alone unit tank fed cold in one side pumped out on same side and hot water in the other with pumped out on same side. You want to plumb it in so the entire hot water system is pumped right?

Sure you don't have a small gas leak that you can't smell, just wondering as you said you had a large bill out of the blue without really changing anything substantial like electric cooker to gas etc.

can't secure waste into compression fit kitchen sink trap

Some traps have a plastic washer between the cone washer and nut! McAlpine have them without them the waste pipe just pulls out easily! They go missing from the packs very often in my local plumbers merchants!

    AUTO AIR VENT

Might be venting the coil on cylinder! Just replace where it is!
