VAUXHALL ASTRA 1.6 KEEPS BREAKING DOWN - HELP!!!

I had the wiring to the crank sensor on a Vectra rot away once. The insulation had got so brittle it just fell apart and shorted out. This was on a car that had only done 107k miles. No wonder their "lifetime" guarantee is for 100k miles.

    steering wheel problem

Did you actually ask the garages to straighten the steering wheel or just check the tracking? If you want it straightened then either adjust the trackrods equally yourself as Peter suggested and then take it for a retrack or ask them to do exactly that. If the arms are properly adjusted then...

    Most unreliable cars?

I had a 406 which was great. 170K before I sold it on. The XM I had was great, the BX likewise. The Xantia was a real Friday car though, always in and out of the garage. The ZX was good as was the 106. The Meganne we had was rubbish, as was the Vectra and I've just scrapped my Alhambra...

    Missing Spare

I don't think so. I put a car in for an MOT having just had to change the tyre before I set off because there was a nail in it. You could just say the tyre had to be changed and it's at the tyre place. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_4022109 says spare tyres are...

    Northern Lights

I'd love to see them too. I've just read BillBryson's book Neither Here nor There and he goes to somewhere in the north of Norway to see them. It is apparently ver hit and miss, he was there for at least a week maybe two and then suddenly on the last night bingo.

    Tyre pressure gauge

I've got two. One is an RAC one and the other I can't remember the make but I got it from Halfords. The two differ by a couple of PSI and I think the Halfords one is more accurate than the RAC. IIRC the RAC one came as part of a kit from Lidl which included a tread depth gauge and a couple of...

    Renault megane will not start

Beware that you can only enter the code manually a certain number of times. The remote packed up on our Megane (1996 model) and we just entered the code manually. This worked fine for about 3 months then it would start but only run for about 5 or 10 minutes.

    window defrosting

I use a 1kW fan room heater on an extension lead from my garage. :) At our previous house where this wasn't an option I used to take two bottles of water out with me. One at room temp and the other luke warm or a bit hotter. Pour the cool one over the windscreen then the hotter one. If you...

    Most unreliable cars?

Has anyone done a count up of which cars crop up most commonly here? A quick scan would lead me to avoid Vauxhalls especially Vivaros, Peugeots and Volkswagens. Fords feature often too but I guess they are just about the world's most popular brand so I suppose they would.

SNAP went the crocodile... or was it the croc?

I don't know perhaps they ought to be sued for not checking their equipment properly. It's not like she's grossly overweight or something, the kit ought to be able to take her weight without failing.

    Ford Galaxy!02 plate

On my Alhambra that heater doesn't work either. I find having the cabin heater on helps a bit (the one on a separate switch on the dash) but I just put up with the cold for the first 5 miles.

    Peugeot 206 heater.

It really was quite disgusting to look at  but it did work properly afterwards.

    Peugeot 206 heater.

First try for airlocks as others have said. My wife had a 106 diesel a few years ago which had similar symptoms. I tried bleeding and what have you but found the pipes were still cold. So I disconnected the heater pipes and hooked up a hose to it. A whole load of rusty sludge came out of it...
