    Clutch judder

Since I posted a mechanic had a quick look. There is an oil leak in the area, but he can not see where. Which explains why it has phases of judder then corrects itself. But given the mileage (96,000 miles) it must be due for a new clutch anyway A new clutch is about £500, but I fear that other...

    Clutch judder

My car is a basic model Hyundai i20 2013 which has done 96,000 miles. I do mostly town driving. I have a clutch judder problem that has been coming-and-going over the years I have had the car. Every year or so it has a period of judderyness, then it clears up of its own accord. But now it has...

Damp rot in doorpost - should I let it breath or seal it up.

Thank you. I have used a variety of fillers over the years, and Ronseal Wet Rot Wood Hardener. The post is completely dry now and it isn't rotten, though it may need a touch of filler here and there. The present state of play is in the photos below.

Damp rot in doorpost - should I let it breath or seal it up.

At the present time am just thinking to keep repairing. Sometime in the future new door, windows, post. And probably roof as it is a bit crap too. But for the mean time a repair and paint.

Damp rot in doorpost - should I let it breath or seal it up.

Hi folks, I have been having a problem with dampness in a front doorpost. Every couple of years I was finding some rot at the bottom of the post, digging it out, filling it, then painting over it. I assume that some dampness was getting in at the top then ending up at the bottom due to...

    fix front steps

Half way through the job and I could do with a bit of help. I have done the bottom step. The middle two bricks on the next step have been fixed in place using the repair mortar on the underside of the bricks. I now need to fill the gap between them and the underside of the step above. But...

    fix front steps

Hi all. My front step and stairs leading down from it are needing repaired. They are 50 ish years old and the cement (if that is what it is) has dissolved and many of the bricks are loose. The whole thing is solid enough just now, it doesn't wobble, but needs work to keep it that way. I...

Outdoor varnish on a bike frame.

I am doing up an old push bike, there are patches of metal here and there, and lots of scratches to the paintwork. I kind of like the beat up look, and I like to use what I have rather than buy new. I have some solvent-based interior varnish left over from indoor jobs, what would happen if I...

    Beko dishwasher not draining

I'm not sure what you mean. But it is connected to the same place that it has been connected to for the last twenty years. The dishwasher in question is only 2 years old, the last one lasted at least twice as long. The hose goes from the bottom of the machine up to a height of about 80cm, then...

    Beko dishwasher not draining

I sponged out all the water I could see. Then I disconnected the drain house and sucked on it. There was a gurgling noise from the dishwasher and water came up the hose, what does this indicate? Maybe that the hose or somewhere inside the machine is a bit blocked but not completely blocked...

    Beko dishwasher not draining

Hi, When the wash cycle ended it failed to drain. There was a little bit of a trickling noise, but it was feeble and barley audible. It certainly did not sound like a pump working at full blast whilst pushing against a blocked drain house. Is there a way to check the drain house? (BTW it...

    Beko dishwasher not draining

Hi, Some progress. I got the filter out, some slight gunge but nothing serious. I tipped up the machine and a lot of water came out. After that I have been able to start a wash cycle, but I don't know yet if it is going to drain. David

    Beko dishwasher not draining

Hi, My Beko DVS04X20W isn't draining. Only two years old, very disappointing. I can't get the filter out but I will work on that, the manual isn't very clear about how to do it. What I have done is disconnect the drain hose from where it joins the main drainage system under the kitchen...

Is shed & fence treatment okay for facia boards

Thank you. I hadn't though of covering the existing timber with cladding.

Is it better to leave door post to breath?

My fear is that the water is getting in at the top, which it might be because the roof is a fibre-glass sheet (that's what it looks like), with hairline cracks. If I clad in PVC then the water won't get out, which I think was what was happening when it was all sealed up with paint. If I leave...

Is shed & fence treatment okay for facia boards

Hello all, In the past I have treated the facia boards on my house extension with wood stain (see picture). If I do that again I reckon I'd probably have to remove the old wood stain before applying new. Would it be a good idea for me just to remove all the obvious loose wood stain, then...

Is it better to leave door post to breath?

Hello all. I have had a problem with the door post on my porch for years. Every year or maybe every second year I find that I need to re-paint the post. At the bottom it is usually damp and a bit rotten so I let it dry out, apply wood hardener and filler, then paint it again. I don't know...

Overflow pipe leads into wall but can't be seen exiting outside the house

Sorry everyone, the overflow pipe does lead out of the wall, but it it isn't easy to spot. I took the suggestion to tip some water down the overflow, then went outside and there was a damp patch on my (very white) roughcast. I still couldn't see the pipe it is flush with the wall not sticking...

External wall in the roof space

I live in a semi-detached house built by Wimpy in the late 70s. Block and block cavity wall construction, and the cavity has been filled with insulating polystyrene beads. Will the gable wall in the roof space (the triangular bit of the gable wall) also be double-skin with an air gap? Or as...

Overflow pipe leads into wall but can't be seen exiting outside the house

There isn't a redundant pipe sticking out of the house anywhere. There is one for the central heater header tank and no others. A couple of weeks ago the ballcock on the tank failed to shut off the water supply. Water spilled over into the overflow pipe, which leaked at a bend which I think...
