Being fairly new to this trade I am still trying to find out which paints to buy. I'd like to know what paint's you pro's use, for quality and cost effectiveness please. At the moment I am using Johnstone's Trade emulsion's which are extremely good (especially their white and magnolia) for...

    Do sparks overcharge?

I was in the pub the other night and overheard a sparky bragging that he was going to make nearly £4K for 1 weeks work! Surely he is talking utter cr@p? My friend used to be a spark and made nowhere near that kind of money!

    Which trade to get into??

Just a thought. You say there's no real money in decorating...depends how much you want to earn. Some people don't want to be stinking rich, they just want to do a job they enjoy and get paid enough money to pay their mortgage. I can't speak for the other trades but I am a decorator, earn a...

    exterior filler

I use either car body filler or Cuprinol Trade filler which you have to mix, both set extremely hard and can be sanded pretty easily. If you are filling bare wood be sure to prime it first.

is this really the work of a professional decorator

No excuse for that kind of work, are you sure he's a proper deccy? Any self-respecting good decorator would not leave that like it is. Tell him to thin the paint a little that will help with those horrendous brush/roller marks, and get some decent kit to put it on with! If I were you I would...

    Exterior paint job rough quote

£600 sounds like a good deal to me. You sound a right tight ars* so even if you got quoted £200 it would be too much. Have a bash at it yourself and then when it goes wrong call a pro.

Running a border up a stairwall

How do others go about running a border up the middle of a stairwall? The stairs are not a single case, they turn after about 3 steps so obviously the angle would need to change.

Which white emulsion to use as top coat?

What do other people use for their top coats of white emulsion for ceilings? Do people use the same contract matt as a finish coat? What do people prefer, vinyl or non vinyl for the best finish?

    What paint do you use?

When pricing a job if the customer insists on Dulux emulsion being used would you just buy it off the shelf, the retail stuff? B&Q sell 2.5 litres for around £15. If you're pricing up a large house with many rooms it would cost hundreds!! A job I looked at the other day will need around 80...

    Wallpaper on fireplace wall

Thanks Robbie. I usually start it off with the edge of the paper up to the line in the centre of the breast and have had no problems but I was reading a book the other day that told me to start with the centre of the paper in the centre of the breast and I started to wonder. What would you do...

    Wallpaper on fireplace wall

When wallpapering a fireplace wall with a chimney breast where do you start? Do you put the centre of your first piece on the centre of the chimney breast or the edge of your first piece on the centre of the chimney breast?

Always remember though if you're sanding back to bare plaster to put a coat of alkali resisting primer before you apply any OIL based paints

    Alkali resisting primer

The reason I ask if emulsion under the oil eggshell will be ok is that the whole bathroom (apart from this one bad wall) has got emulsion on. Will it be ok to put the oil eggshell over this or do I need to coat the whole bathroom out with alkali resisting primer?
