Wrong section I think mate, you need a plasterer not a decorator. Also, I think £250 sounds pretty cheap compared to what plasterers charge around my way, unless they will be doing the job in a day.

    Alkali resisting primer

Thanks for that. You say that the Zinsser 123 makes the painted edges into one, is it thick or something? I've never used the 123.

To try and save money  This is a hard one. The woman just won't have it stripped and I don't want to walk away from the job as its my first after Christmas.

    NEWLEY SKIMMED WALLS

Please don't think I'm saying you're wrong because I'm not you've been in the trade waaaay longer than me! It's just the way I do things. I noticed when I have filled bare wood that the adhesion of the filler is not as good than if you prime first and the same with plaster

    Alkali resisting primer

I'll be painting a small bathroom next week where condensation is a big problem, the owner insists that he wants me to put oil-based eggshell on all walls. The paint is peeling back to bare plaster. Once I have made good the area by scraping and filling would I be able to mist coat the area with...

Thanks Robbie. I know its sloppy but what can you do if thats what the customer wants? I have stressed to her about the problems that may arise but she is totally for papering over the existing paper.

    NEWLEY SKIMMED WALLS

Me personally would always mist then fill. New plaster is so porous it will suck the moisture out of the filler and could just drop off.

    Wallpapering over wallpaper

I know, I know, its bad and normally I would never do it and Zampa's going to shout don't bother. But, the owner of a flat wants me to try it and is aware of the problems that could arise. There is a (silk) painted vinyl wallpaper on at the moment and she wants it covering with a blown vinyl...

when does the work start picking up?

Hi Carl. I started on my own January 08 after working for an idiot for years and I have not looked back. When all this credit crunch malarky started I was very worried because I, like many others, have a mortgage to pay. I thought I couldn't have picked a worse year to go self employed! It will...

    Satinwood on exterior woodwork

I've just been to see a job. A house that has about 10 windows (exterior) that need re-painting. Obviously I won't be painting them in this weather. The windows have a satin finish on them so I asked the owner if he had the old tin, the tin was the Dulux Satinwood - oil-based. I thought this...

    Zinsser BIN

What alternatives are there for painting over stain or varnish, both for adhesion and bleeding? I'm not going to be using the BIN again I just don't like the stuff. I've heard the Dulux supergrip isn't meant to go over varnish?? Anything else out there?

    Zinsser BIN

Has anybody had trouble with this stuff or is it just me? I used it to cover a water stain on a ceiling and it took about 5 coats of emulsion to cover! I've also used it over stained/varnished woodwork and found that it chips very easily. What do others use?

Painting over when wallpapaer takes chunks of old panit off

I priced a hall, stairs, landing for a middle-aged couple once. I had a good look around, took some notes and told them that I would put the quote in the post. It was a pretty straight forward job so the quote was very fair. Do you know what the cheeky bitc*es last words to me were? KEEP IT...

    Filler again (polyfilla)

I used this stuff once, and the box with the blue writing which is similar and didn't think much of it at all. It took ages to set and when it did it was a nightmare to sand. Get yourself some powder Toupret filler its much better.

Painting over when wallpapaer takes chunks of old panit off

The more I read your posts the more I think your having a dig at how much a professional decorator would charge you to do this job, which annoys me. Please forgive me if I'm wrong but thats the way it sounds.

Painting over when wallpapaer takes chunks of old panit off

Why do you keep mentioning the price when nobody asked you how much you were quoted? £350 sounds like a heck of a good price for the work you mentioned you should've torn his/her arm off!
  19. D

    How much do you think?

Its impossible for anyone to give you a price without seeing it, even a rough one. Get a couple of P&D's around to give you a free estimate.

    Exterior hardwood doors

Thanks guys. It'll probably be the oil route I would've thought. So is Linseed oil the best option for this job, be it raw or boiled? I've heard that tung oil is good??
