BS7671:2018 DPC - Local Earth Electrode with TN systems

That is true. The problem would be in estates built since the 70s when plastic water and gas services started coming in (so nothing extraneous to connect to earth) and before earthing at each service joint started happening. As soon as one property gets a rod in, it immediately becomes the path...

BS7671:2018 DPC - Local Earth Electrode with TN systems

The only thing I can think of is to only allow it on completely new build sites (no idea how you would enforce/apply that), and everyone else would have to use TT earthing, if it's so much of a requirement to have a rod at each property.

BS7671:2018 DPC - Local Earth Electrode with TN systems

I used to work for BT before I went into working for a DNO, so I've heard all about it! The advantage BT have is that much of their system is ducted, not the case in the DNO world, and where DNO cables are ducted, the joints are just buried, unlike at BT where they usually build an inspection...

    New build loft flooring

I can't see it voiding the warranty any more than putting boards on stilts would. And the advantage with just laying cardboard down is, if there was an issue, it takes 5 minutes to remove it and deny you ever did it

BS7671:2018 DPC - Local Earth Electrode with TN systems

What people probably don't realise is the hourly rate of a contract jointer is huge, especially by the time the DNO has put their uplift on. It makes no sense to tie up a team of two to bang rods in and hang meter boxes when you're going to have an electrician there anyway to install your...

How much to change a 60A DNO fuse for a 100A?

Post a photo of your cut out and I'll cast my eye over it I wouldn't admit to running servers etc as they may insist on changing the metering class to non domestic.

How much to change a 60A DNO fuse for a 100A?

Many older cutouts use ME type fuses that only go up to 80A. Newer ones tend to use MF type fuses which go to 100A, so you might need a cutout change to facilitate this. Some DNOs have certain rules, some like to fit 100A everywhere, some like to fit 60A everywhere, some it depends whether you...

BS7671:2018 DPC - Local Earth Electrode with TN systems

I've had a flick through and it doesn't look like anyone from a DNO has replied here so I'll have a go... Upkeep and maintenance of TNS/SNE/4 core networks has very little to do with neutral faults, inserting bits of 3 core for repairs/diversions/whatever has minimal effect on the integrity of...

    New build loft flooring

If you've no intention of standing up inside the loft, 3 layers of cardboard (from moving boxes) laid on top of the insulation seems to work well for light things like suitcases and Xmas decs, that's what the previous owners of my house did anyway!

    Ensuite chipboard floor sagging problem

I am about to start refitting my ensuite, and the floor is a bit saggy just inside the entrance door. I have had the ceiling down below for some plumbing work and the joint of 2 of the chipboard flooring sheets is just next to a joist and unsupported (see below pic) First thought was to put a...

    Consumer unit isolation switch

My smart meter has saved me so much energy. It used to take loads of energy to get out of my chair and read the old meter every month, no such problem now

    Something missing from meter cupboard?

Looks like it was wired by a moron, officially now you've now got to get the DNO or supplier out to isolate as your garage is connected on before the isolator, rendering it pretty pointless as it can only isolate part of the load. I'd also hazard a guess that if your main consumer unit is fed...

HRM Wallstar, intermittent locking out when cold

I spent yesterday morning stripping it down, removed the pump filter and solenoid stem and cleaned both up. I then took the non return valve off, couldn't find any crap in it, so I tested it by firing a load of water through it backwards, and it started coming out the other end which it...

HRM Wallstar, intermittent locking out when cold

I'm back, again.... All was going well until about a week ago when I (stupidly) ran out of oil. A neighbour advised me to tilt the plastic tank forward by shoving a brick under it to get me going, and it subsequently fed a load of water and sludge up to the pump. I drained the tank out...

Thinking of going for an unvented cylinder...

My boiler is a 20 year old HRM Wallstar, easy to work on and repair, and still going strong so I've got no plans to replace it. The nearest gas meter to my boiler is approximately 5 miles away in the next village, as stated above I have no mains gas, so I reckon I would struggle with the...

Thinking of going for an unvented cylinder...

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I should get the mains pressure and flow tested, I'll get this done when I get the man in to pressure test the heating pipework. I know you shouldn't assume but it should hopefully be OK, others on the same estate have had unvented cylinders fitted, it's a 25mm...

Thinking of going for an unvented cylinder...

I'm doing some work in the loft and need to relocate or get rid of the cisterns for hot water and central heating. Hopefully converting the central heating to be a sealed system won't be a problem, the boiler can handle it, and I'll wet pressure test it when I alter some pipework next month to...

HRM Wallstar, intermittent locking out when cold

Just to follow up from this, I took everything apart and resealed it, and got almost no air bubbles coming through (maybe one difficult to see tiny one every 30 seconds). I was still waking up to a flexi line full of air in the morning and a locked out boiler. I managed to pick up a brand new...

HRM Wallstar, intermittent locking out when cold

The bits came today so I've gone out and put in a new combined NRV and fire valve, and a new flexi line. I've probably got the wrong flexi line as it's angled at one end (presumably meant for the pump end) but my pump has a right angle adapter screwed in to the bottom so I've had to put the...
