    Main incoming cable 10mm

Probably because of the number of variables in it! Size of transformer, size of main in the street or overhead line, number of people on that cable, distance from transformer, size of service cable, etc, etc, etc. In my opinion there couldn't be a single defined 'limit' for everyone...

    Strange goings on...

Definitely sounds like an inadvertent back feed on the lighting circuit, possibly caused when changing the switches if it's never happened before. There's probably a fuse blown for the downstairs lighting circuit but you need to find out where the back feed is coming from to make the...

    Meter move

And therein lies the problem - if it keeps blowing but another few wraps of fuse wire stops it, why bother calling a sparky to find out what the problem is? That costs money! But we're digressing somewhat...

Side extension on a corner plot

Thanks for the info, other houses on the same street have put 2 storey side extensions on, but none of the corner plots are really suitable for such an extension due to the way the land slopes etc. I strongly suspect the sale is a probate so not much chance of planning permission as a...

    Meter move

I'd be happier if he said a BS88 or BS1361 board, but I really do have a problem with old 3036 boards, I've seen too many burnt out when there's been a fault on a circuit...

    Pulling down over head powerlines.

Epic thread ! We see people all the time who are usually apologetic and know they've made a big **** up when they've hit underground cables, there really is no excuse for taking down an overhead span, especially with that many blokes around. The bill could have been much worse, it's not a...

    Meter move

You don't want to be messing about taking meter boards off the wall, temporary or not. Speak to your DNO and get a quote for what you want to do. Don't expect it to be cheap. I recently found a builder who had took three meter boards off the walls and demolished them, we disconnected the...

Side extension on a corner plot

I'm looking at buying a house with a view to stay there a long time so looking for potential to extend. There's a semi I've seen that's got a reasonable sized corner plot, which I thought was ideal for a future extension. I have aspirations to one day have a double garage/workshop, the full...

    meter box

Oh it doesn't surprise me any more lol, when I first started I couldn't believe how small most of the cables are, theres so much 0.0225 in the street round here, and yet when I was a sparky you were forced to put massive cables in all the time, took a while to get my head round :D

    Tails between Cutout and Meter

Pretty sure it is the meter operator rather than DNO, when we put a new supply in we leave a cutout and that's it, the meter operator does the rest. Having said that, I have a job at the moment replacing 3 submains in a building that are the DNOs, the meters are at the far end and the...

    meter box

The cutout screwed to the ramp is definitely OK, I remember seeing it in the STs somewhere One thing I will give WPD though is they aren't as forceful as CN for having the meter box outside for a domestic supply Did a job recently and there were 3 street lights, a bus shelter and a traffic...

    Metering - !! westie101 !!

And it's one reason why HV tariffs are cheaper than LV ! There's so many different factors, no load losses, and depends on how loaded up the tx is. To a lesser degree you lose some in the LV incomer but I assume it's reasonably sized and not very long! Thinking about it, if its a new...

Single phase circuit using 4 core SWA

As per my last post I'm planning a rewire for my new house, part of it includes a feed to the workshop outbuilding. I'm pretty sure it's brought in by twin and earth at the moment...hopefully in at least a conduit but nothing would surprise me (its still got a metal clad 3036 fuse board original...

    Which consumer unit?

Thanks for the replies, I have 'seen the light' and found some much more reasonable prices for some RCBOs so have decided to go down that route. Regards the freezer socket, I'm pretty sure my current house has it on the kitchen ring and I've had no tripping so omitting that should be OK...

    Testing a three phase supply

Between phase and earth you should see a nominal 230v. Between two different phases you should see a nominal 400v. I'm not sure where you've got the idea of sticking the meter between live and neutral to measure current, that'll (hopefully) just blow your meter fuses! You need to break...

    Which consumer unit?

Sounds like a brilliant excuse to get the conduit bender out :D

    Testing a three phase supply

A 3phase AC motor will be a balanced load so no neutral. Check each phase voltage with respect to earth and between each phase, if somethings amiss there I would bet that a contactor somewhere in the control circuit has burnt out

    Which consumer unit?

I'm in the process of designing a rewire for the house I'm buying (1950s big ish 3 bed semi) I've split most of the circuits over 2 RCDs (3 circuits on one, 4 on the other) but I have an additional three circuits that I believe should be non RCD protected. Freezer spur, UPS spur and submain...
