    using british gas

    Of course not, if someone is coming to quote me on a job then I can decide whether to go ahead with them after. I would never imagine any engineer arriving at a customers site to actually do a job for which a price hasn't been agreed. IF I was advised of this by the company I would point...

    using british gas

    As a potential customer rather than an engineer I have to say if I'd called out a BG engineer who arrived and then wanted more than the 168 fixed fee quoted then he would be bounced out the house just like any other chancer. Which in effect will cost BG something.

    Baxi Combi 105e - died - no hot water, no lights, nothing...

    There is a fuse on the 105e - 3amp I think - it's part of the main block where the power comes in. If you don't have a multimeter and/or the confidence to open up the boiler electrical connections I'd get an engineer out.

    Wifi slow but not via ethernet

    You say connected but has the router issued you with an IP address? Open network and sharing centre (access via right click on network icon bottom right) and view the status. Any errors reported there? If not, check details to see the IP information given.

    Laptop recommendations

    I deliberately didn't mention Acer but has Dave posted, I've not heard about any wide reaching problems with them. I believe there was some problems with Office when upgrading to windows 7 but as a clean install you shouldn't have any problems. Take a look at openoffice as well. It's...

    Welding/Soldering radiator

    I think it's chrome over steel, not really sure as it looks rusty where the water has leaked.

    Welding/Soldering radiator

    Thanks for the quick response. Which is best; solder or weld?

    Welding/Soldering radiator

    Hi, I ordered a 'victorian style' rad and on installation it was leaking from one of the welded union joints. The supplier sent me a new one which is fine and they didn't want the old one back and asked that I dispose of it. It seems a shame to throw out a lovely (and fairly expensive) rad...

    Laptop very slow when not connected to network cable.

    Can you get at device manager or network via the control panel? Is it all apps from desktop that are slow (except office)? How much memory do you have installed? He may have loaded office toolbar which is eating your systems resources waiting to start.

    Boiler service - what should I expect?

    Cheers again. This is my concern in regards to finding an RGI I can trust, cost isn't my main concern as, in my opinion, a proper fix/repair/service the first time saves it's own money in the future. The thing is, I wasn't involved in the original installation (I just paid for it!) as it...

    Boiler service - what should I expect?

    Thanks for the reply, what do you do as part of a service? As comprehensive as nogoodatfaultfinding or as quick as BG? I have had a RGI recommended to me through a mate and I've explained that there is some problem but nothing that can't wait so just waiting for him to get back to how he...

    You can certainly pick up good laptops around the 400 mark. You might struggle to get an intel dual core without big compromises elsewhere but don't be put off by Athlon chips. Toshiba or HP are imo good brands as are Dell (I refuse to buy from them since they moved their support to India...

    Approximate costings for a very low output shop boiler

    As I have already posted, I misread the OP's original post and read it as a combi boiler swap. I posted you can get a decent cheap combi for 400 quid and that the fitting would be as expensive. That information is based upon what I have paid in the past for the same service so I have...

    Approximate costings for a very low output shop boiler

    FFS I read the OP's post as he wanted to swap out a combi and reckoned 400 quid for labour alone would be around the mark. Is it that far from the mark? Suit yourself whether you want work or not, maybe you'd rather it was housewifes who won't want question what you're doing. Cheap isn't...
