    Marshalls heritage yorkstone flagstones pointing

Hi guys, by coincedence, I'm about to lay and point some Marshalls Yorkstone flagstones (and I'm also in Fife), and Thermo has already put be straight about laying them on a bed of wet mortar... I've got a question about what the consistency of the mortar should be (ie: how much water to add...

    Bedding for patio

Ok, I hear ya. 1:6 mortar mix then? And using sharp sand for the mortar, rather than builders sand?

    Bedding for patio

Good point - I didn't mention the paving type. It's Marshalls yorkstone paving slabs (ie: fake stone). Brochure says that it must be bedded on mortar and fully pointed with mortar too... I had simply planned to use a few different sizes (300x300, 450x300, etc), to avoid a "repeating squares"...

    Bedding for patio

Great - so in that context, the mortar bed would be 150-75-38 = 37mm thick, right? If so, that sounds sensible, and doesn't involve any sand (apart from what's in the mortar I suppose), so that's what I'll do! Coming back to original question about the concrete though - would it be any...

    Bedding for patio

6 inches / 150mm, including the thickness of the slabs (which are 38mm from memory). The base is pretty compact, as it already has a lot of legacy hardcore in it from the previous garden decorations...

    Bedding for patio

Nope, no hardcore laid - that's the point up to. I was planning to get the hardcore delivered, alonge with a wacker plate, for the weekend. But I've got that on hold until I've got a clear idea what I'm doing (which could take a while, I admit) :) Marshman - I assume that there would be...

    Bedding for patio

Hi all - I'm building a patio, and having moved tonnes of earth, poured lots of concrete and built a few low retaining walls to level and contain the site, I'm ready to add the bedding and lay the paving slabs on top. I'd planned to follow what I'd read in books and online, and basically have a...

    Picture of the week!

Is that wall made of polystyrene? I'm no sparky - can anyone explain what the intent of that frightening looking mess is? Have they tried to take a spur off the ring mains?

    Yet another bathroom fan question!

If I go with the triple-pole isolator, I assume that the SFCU shown in the diagram can be replaced with a simple fused connection box (should the manufacturer require the fan to be fused). Correct? Where do people recommend playing the triple-pole isolator? On the wall beside the fan (zone...

    Yet another bathroom fan question!

Thanks for that! Can anyone tell me where the SFCU (or triple pole isolatorm, if one uses that approach) is normally fitted relative to the fan?

    Yet another bathroom fan question!

Ok, so you're saying that the SFCU does not break the ground connection between the feed and load side when switched off, and that there should indeed be a ground connection between the switch and the junction box just before the fan? That certainly makes more sense to me... Thanks! J

    Yet another bathroom fan question!

Hi all - I'm planning on installing a bathroom fan as described in the wiki at... http://wiki.diynot.com/electrics:lighting:fan It's the circuit diagram below that I intend to use The main difference is that I intend to use a 2 gang switch in the hall, instead of the DP pull switch...
