What is the best way to fill a hole?

Thanks for suggestions everyone! For the time being, I've shoved a rag in the hole. I've also cleaned out the airing cupboard, aired it, and put an air freshener in there. So we'll see how it goes. I'm not planning to live here for many years, so I'll just try and put up with it until I...

What is the best way to fill a hole?

I live in a first floor flat in a late 90s building. The build quality isn't that great as smells tend to waft up from the flat below into my kitchen, bathroom, and airing cupboard - wherever there is shared pipework, I guess. I don't mind the occasional smell of food but it is the smell of...

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

Softus, this is my immersion heater with the cap removed. I'm afraid that's the best my camera can do. You can't see it very well, but the arrow is pointing to the left, at the "+". JohnD, this is the top of my cylinder. As you can see, the pipes are uninsulated, and it is that pipe...

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

If I were to change it, it's difficult to guage what temperature it actually is, as the dial has no numbers! All it has is a + at one end (where it is currently) pointed and a - at the other. Can anyone translate this to an actual range?

    Just what is that noise?

Thanks John! That sounds like quite a task, but I might give it a go. It is amazing how much noise that is making even quite a distance from the cold-water cistern! Presumably it is carried down the pipes.

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

John - this is superb advice, thanks every so much. All of those possibilities seem reasonable enough, and if this seems like relatively normal behaviour, then I am happy to leave it as it is. I've had a look under the cap, and the thermostat appears to be on the highest setting. I have...

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

Cheers John, for that excellent reply. The only thing I'm having trouble understanding is why my boiler is coming on intermittently, despite no water being used. Let me explain... I live on my own, so in a typical day, I might have a shower, wash my hands a few times, wash the pots and...

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

I take it back - I know exactly what went in, as it still has the label on it! It says: IMMERSION HEATER 11" SUPERLOY / 800 COMBINED THERMOSTAT & SAFETY CUT-OUT FITTED

    Just what is that noise?

I have a cold-water cistern in the loft. I don't mind doing DIY, so long as it is within my capabilities!

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

The element is at the bottom of the cylinder. I'm afraid not. I was in another room whilst the work took place. The cylinder is surrounded by a thick (2-3") green solid foam insulation. None of the pipes around it are insulated. I'm afraid I don't know the exact temperature, but it...

    Just what is that noise?

Following on from the recent replacement of the immersion heater in my hot water cylinder, which was making a dreadful noise (see my other thread: http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=157760), I have now noticed that my water pipes are also very noisy. The noise only seems to occur...

Electric water cylinder - What is normal?

BACKGROUND: I have an electric cylinder boiler, which is in my airing cupboard, and heats the water for my taps only, as I do not have central heating. The boiler comes on periodically in the early hours of the morning, when my Economy 7 night-time rate kicks in. It does not come on during...
