    CW tank size

I'm about to fit a shower which is to be pumped via a Salamander NP50 and a thermostatic mixer. The pump instructions recommend a 50 gallon CW tank. The existing tank is 50x50x50cm and I reckon this must hold about 25 gallons. Thing is, it looks like it's made of asbestos. Like that stuff...

Hot rads but no hot water

OK. I spoke to a helpful chap at a firm that does fans and PCBs in Watford who've been very helpful and good value when I had a prob with the glow-worm fan thermistor problem. With his help I was able to understand my system and realise that it was gravity fed on HW and pumped when on CH/HW...

Hot rads but no hot water

I wired up the immersion but I needn't have bothered as the HW is now working, albeit only when the CH is on. Seems hotter than before, too. The pump doesn't run (earlier I thought it did) when HW is on, the boiler cutting out after a short while. I'll check to see if power is switched to the...

Hot rads but no hot water

Realised I'd need to back fill the HW heating coil. Done that but still no HW. The boiler fires when HW only selected but goes out after a short time. There's a faint sizzling from the HE area after the gas switches off so I suspect that it's overheating due to the pump not running unless on...

Hot rads but no hot water

I checked the tank this morning and it fills up when I run the hot tap. I then back-filled the system by opening both taps on a mixer and covering the outlet ubtil water ran from the overflow. The boiler and pump operate when I turn the control to HW but then stop after a minute or so and the...

Hot rads but no hot water

I had a look here: http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/boilers.htm As I have two tanks, mine will be like the one in the top diagram. Now I can see how the HW side works. Looking at it, I suppose my problem could be a stat or the motorised valve.

Hot rads but no hot water

Blasps, You're right. However, in three separate instances when local plumbers were asked about a problem on three different systems, only one of which was my own, the answer has been the same: new boiler. In each case it was fixed by replacing relatively inexpensive parts, namely a fan...

Hot rads but no hot water

Thanks for your interest. If you mean the HW cylinder, I didn't see a bleed cap. There are two tanks in the loft , the smaller of the two I assume is for topping up the CH, the other for the upstairs taps incl. HW via the boiler. I'll pop up there and check the tanks. I had a look at the...

Hot rads but no hot water

I have an old Thorn M type boiler which has worked fine until a few days ago when I replaced a leaking rad valve and had to partially drain the system. The sytem tops up via a header tank and once I bled the rads the heating worked fine. Now I have no hot water. If I put the controls on to HW...

Glow-worm fuel saver 80 F cut out problems

As Raden says, this sounds like the fan as I had the same trouble a few years back. I fitted a recon unit which cost £25. It's an easy fix if you are reasonably mechanically-minded. What is your experience?

The importance of knowing your left from right

I'm a security installer/service engineer and was short of work last year so when my mate asked me if I wanted to refurb her bathroom I gave it a go. I've done this kind of work before but to minimise downtime, I decided to leave the tiling and plumbing to others so I asked another mate's...

    Hoover New Wave hot rinse

I fixed a fault on my mother's washer last week which turned out to be coins in the pump stopping it from draining. However, she now tells me it's working ok apart from rinsing with hot water, although it fills using cold water. I only removed and refitted the pump so I'm at a loss to work out...

Flickering lamps after dimmer fitted - possible solution

I should correct my terminolgy here. By LV I mean 12v, which should be referred to as ELV. LV is the term for 240v.

Flickering lamps after dimmer fitted - possible solution

I fitted the resistors and all lamps are working. There's a very slight flickering at one point in the range but otherwise it's ok. I was a bit concerned about the resistor getting hot (it's a wire-wound type with it's own heatsink) so I soldered and sleeved the terminals and made a bit of a...

Flickering lamps after dimmer fitted - possible solution

I hear ya. I suggested RS and Maplin as they are two names most on here would recognize. Not everyone on here is in the trade or is aware of the lesser known suppliers. Besides, how much can you save when shopping round for a £1.50 component? Yes, RS are expensive (mostly) but they've got...

Flickering lamps after dimmer fitted - possible solution

Those who have had trouble with LV lighting after fitting a dimmer switch may find this interesting. I recently bought a couple of dimmer switches suitable for electronic transformers but when fitted, the lamps flickered at certain settings, accompanied by a buzzing from the switch. After...

Ariston Eurocombi SX20 - no hot water

Yup, it was the diaphragm. Got it working only for it to fail the next day. Not the diaphragm - there was something mounted on top of the pump that was leaking. She's got a BG contract on it now, thankfully.

    Glowworm boiler problems

I've had some fun and games with a Glowworm boiler - maybe this could be what's happening to yours. This one was cutting out after a couple of minutes due to a faulty thermistor on the fan motor. When the fan got warm, the thermistor, which is fitted on the fan windings, would trip. The fan...

Ariston Eurocombi SX20 - no hot water

The CH works ok but you get a bit of hot water only when the CH is on then it runs cold. Someone suggested this might be down to a faulty diverter valve. Your opinions would be appreciated. Ta. Paul

    Glowworm Boilers blows fuses

Put a Megger on the fan when it was bolted in & it had a bit of a leak to earth. When I tested it on 1000v I could hear it tracking. Bizarrely, it was ok when it was tested by the suppliers afew months back. Got a new one off them FOC and it's running fine now. Fingers crossed.
