How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Then we connected a 15° bend to the spigot of the pipe inserted in the >6" clay pipe in the manhole wall. This was a bit awkward, since the mortar was still not very well set & we wanted to avoid disturbing it by pushing the plastic pipe inwards & breaking the bond/seal between plastic & mortar...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Finally managed to get the IC installed yesterday. Bailed out few inches of rainwater from trench... Squidgy clay... the kind that pulls your boots off... Cut collar off & removed cracked section... Covered end to protect joint surface & packed with newspaper to support pipe whilst...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

This is footage from the awful quality endoscope camera : starts facing the back wall (with the line along) then you can just see the circular collar (?) of the pipe downstream on the left; at the end of the video you can see the lip of the >6" clay pipe embedded in the wall. The pipe and...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Hmmm, the main shared pipe? Doesn't look that way from the (really bad) endoscope footage we have - looks like a really wide channel. I maybe try and cut down the footage & post it. We plan to put a proper go-pro down there with a torch on tomorrow before we fit the inspection chamber to get a...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Yeh - I think I'll just grab a bag of extra rapid cement - it was the guy in the photo suggesting the other option, but I feel better about not making up a random mix! Spoke to a couple of companies about getting a CCTV drain survey done (a build over one with full plans drawn up, since...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

We've got a 1/2 bag of postcrete lying around that we've no use for - can we just do a 50:50 mix with a normal cement & sand in a mortar... or should we just go grab a bag of blue circle extra rapid cement? Would that be better?

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Thats a new one to me... how fascinating! Never heard of such a thing (no diagrams found yet either) but several accounts of people describing them. Glad we don't have one! I find all those diagrams so interesting - the care and attention, the problem solving engineering... the Victorians did...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Glad I'm interesting to someone! Ha! Not sure Wessex consider me useful... (maybe more just a bit of a pain!) ...I think on balance adding to their plans of the network & getting an idea of condition/type of sewers in the local area would definitely be useful. Especially considering how much...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

I swear trying to fix a victorian house properly is like pulling a thread on a jumper... still it can be quite fascinating & you learn so much, especially if you are as directly involved as we are! I figure it makes sense to document this stuff - it is historically relevant and despite being out...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

It does seem to be a shared sewer - therefore since the recent government legislation - the responsibility of Wessex Water. Regarding looking for the beginning of the run, not sure how we would without disturbing a lot of people! There are houses running at 90° at the end of this row of terraced...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

There is definitely a ledge part way up. From the endoscope video (terrible quality) the 'roof' looks somewhat curved. I just can't understand why there would be a manhole here, in the middle of the tiny garden, covered over with some serious layer of stone/concrete. The channel inside seems to...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

I've found a few references of traps just before they enter the sewer - as it mentions manholes cannot always be afforded (these houses were built on a terribly tight budget - there is barely any lime or sand in the mortar, it is almost all coal/ash scraped from the inside of blast furnaces!) ...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Thanks bobasd, Not sure I follow all of this. We've dug a good pit - 1.2m deep, approx 1m wide - can't go much bigger due to space limitations. This is how we found the wall of the sewer. We can't use standard flex seal adapters due to the clay pipe being buried in the brick wall of the sewer...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Thanks Ian - we've measured that it projects around 70cm through the wall (its on an angle) before dropping off the ledge into main sewer run. Ah thats good to know theres another option. I'm guessing that would be a job for a professional though (I do want to ensure the job is done properly)...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

A further update. I obtained an 8" spring calliper to measure internal diameter of the clay pipe. ID is 154mm or possibly 155mm. The crack travels 3" inwards, from where the internal surface of the pipe edge starts (ie. excluding the collar). The crack is definitely embedded in the brick wall of...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

In addition to the pipe being larger than 6", it is also cracked & probably not in the best condition :/ Since mortaring it would be difficult to reverse without damaging the pipe further, and it being embedded in the shared sewer wall - I am trying to get clarification from Wessex that...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Ah, ok. Well - we've found that the pipe is actually a bit larger than 6" (hard to measure exactly how much without some kind of large vernier calliper!) - but the flexseal ac4000 doesn't quite fully touch the inner surfaces of the clay pipe... it's almost there but definitely not a sound seal...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

Ok. We will mortar it in before backfilling. Do you mean one of these when you say 6-4 reducer? (that's all I could find - a level invert reducer) I'm possibly overly concerned, but this wouldn't have any kind of rubber seal between it and the inside of the clay pipe like the bandseal...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

First things first, I just want to thank you for your time and those incredibly helpful, clear photos to help explain it Ian. Good point about pushing the pipe past the ridges. There seems to be a good length of the clay pipe behind the brick wall... maybe around 1m or so? (we will likely be...

How to connect to 6" old clay collar? - SOLVED

We've rigged up a very temporary solution for now until we can sort something out properly : You can see the 6" clay pipe collar here more clearly : These band seal connectors from Toolstation are a bit rubbish - they don't have fins on the inside to grip & create a seal like other...
