    Correct fuse/cables for lighting

So my understanding is I can bury my cables in plaster not because the plaster is only 15mm thick but because my Consumer Unit is equipped with an RCCB (RCD). Where would I be able to find some documentation? I have tried a search on the Blg Regs but probably missed it. It's just in case one...

    Correct fuse/cables for lighting

A final question. My downstairs flat has a concrete wall and ceiling and the plaster on the walls is no more than 15mm thick! It will look pretty awful to have a pvc conduit run over the door frame, and if I can avoid the same from the double socket to the FCU. As I am renovating I have already...

    Correct fuse/cables for lighting

I've been trying to carefully twist the cables using a pair of long nose pliers and they have scared the copper a little, so I stopped before causing any damage. Is there really a need to twist every set of cables together?

    Correct fuse/cables for lighting

Thank you! I don't think I will touch the consumer unit :? . I'll use a 5Amp. According to the manufacturer's instructions, if I were to have a radial circuit a 5Amp fuse should be used on the FCU for the outside light, if I were to have a ring circuit a 3Amp should be used. I'm not sure why...

    Correct fuse/cables for lighting

Manufacturer says 3Amp for ring, 5Amp for radial (but don't know which circuit I've got). The double socket has 2 red cables, 2 black and two green/yellow. I have no skirting board in that room at present and I cannot see a metal conduit coming from the concrete floor. It looks like the...

    Correct fuse/cables for lighting

Two simple questions: 1) I need to install an outside lamp. I believe I need to connect a 2.5mm cable from the double plug socket to the FCU. I then need to change the fuse from 13A, but I'm not sure weather to go for a 3A or 5A since I don't know if my circuit or ring or radial? Is it then...

Plastering chimney breast for woodburner Q's

Gypsum plaster could crack anywhere the temperature reaches 50+ celcius (it says it on the pack). I haven't heard of mixing gypsum with vermiculite, so cannot comment. Rendering with sand/cement should be ok above the fireplace, but not sure about the skimming if any. Vitcas can be...

    Bricks upside down in Fireplace

I have made my fireplace recess bigger by taking several bricks off in order to be able to accomodate a woodburner. I have noticed that some bricks are laid upside down without mortar inside the bricks or not much mortar around those bricks. I am more concerned around the top horizontal area of...

    Lime Plastering Base Coat

I want to plaster with lime in and around my fireplace using Natural Hydraulic lime NHL 3.5 and have tested a small area first using a mix of sand/lime 2:1 I was informed that the Base coat needs to be THROWN onto the damp brickwork to expel any air in the mix, making the mortar more...

Natural hydraulic Lime - Shelf life?

Thanks for the information. Hydraulic lime sets with water but it looks like even the contact with air could slowly start that process due to moisture, it reacts probably a bit like cement I guess. The bags have never been opened and are in black bin liners, so hopefully it should be ok...

Natural hydraulic Lime - Shelf life?

Hi, Would anybody know if I can still use Natural hydraulic Lime NHL 3.5 in white powder from unopened bags I bought 18 months ago? A bit of a delayed project, which is to plaster in and around my fireplace. Lime, because it is apparently more fire resistant than cement. The bags...

    Supply to garage/Black conduits

I have a supply of electricity to the garage at the bottom of my garden. There is no separate consumer unit for it. The power comes from the mains fed through the first socket which has two cables coming from the main, ie 2 red, 2 black, 2 earth, and then 1 red, 1 black, 1 earth leading to the...

Air brick: Could the hole be made bigger than 225mm?

The wall is brick, cavity with no insulation, and then brick. The hole is on one side of the internal wall forming part of the length of the room. I've taken a small part of plaster on the ceiling that joins the adjoining wall (forming part of the width of the room) and saw the concrete beams...

Air brick: Could the hole be made bigger than 225mm?

I want to fit an air brick 225 x 140mm. I took one brick out of one of the walls on the inside of the property, but now I want the hole to be slightly on the left. I want to take 3/4 of the brick next to the one I have just taken out which would make the horizontal hole at about 394mm in lenght...

    Re-plastering behind double socket

It only says designed according to IEC-1010, CAT II 600V. Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if the cables are made of steel wired braids, but they look like copper. All I could see were two red cables, two black and two green/yellow coming into the socket from the wall. That socket should be a...

    Re-plastering behind double socket

Pics almost on their way! But first, I need to know how to check the power is dead in order to be able to proceed. I bought a multimeter (as per link below and also in black) but the instructions are way above my understanding. I've unplugged the face of the socket but want to make sure there is...
