    Upgrade price

yeah but it wont be anywhere near as good as one you may build following the guidlines already posted - see a similar post called "what can I build for £200" or similar. I'd go WAY over 5 gig for the system partition, XP and office will just about eat that all up and leave you nothing. As...

    Double hard drive failure!!

Indeed, which is why in a case like this I would put the final decision back onto them. You just made a bell ring now with the fiddling, something to do with a faulty cpu if I recall?

    Double hard drive failure!!

Well, heres my comments for what they are worth. If I get a machine in and I (or the customer...) suspects a drive is faulty, I'll do a few checks- Assuming there are no obvious signs such as the drive clunking, then I'll run checkdisk and the manufacturers utility - some of these have a quick...

    Angle Grinder safety

Another tip, watch you dont set on fire! Might sound a daft thing to say, but I've done it ! cutting some steel tube, the frayed bits around a hole in my overalls at the time caught fire, was funny but could easily not have been funny at all.

    Double hard drive failure!!

Personally I would concentrate on getting back what I can first and foremost from the 2 drives. As for fixing bad sectors, if it were me, and ibm's DFT was throwing up problems, I'd bin the drive (after ghosting it of course!) you have already seen what a headache a dodgy drive can cause, I...

    Double hard drive failure!!

Cant say as I know of one - but please let us all know what you find and how it worked! The only ones I've used are Ontracks easy recovery pro (not cheap) they also do a piece of software that might fit your needs but thats expensive too and I havnt seen it. I have also used one called "lost...

    Double hard drive failure!!

Ol so the drives arnt "faulty" just the info on them is, as you say muddled. There is plenty of fata recovery stuff out there, but I'm sure you sorted that out with Iggy? I'd do a complete backup first, ghost the drive if it were me, but also if it were me, I'd concentrate on the others first.

    what can i build for 2-300£ ?

Personally I'd save on something else, all you will do after 6 months is have to wipe your system clean when you put the new board in, much less hassle to have the right building blocks to build on rather than removing the foundations later on. Anyway, its up to you of course, just my advice, I...

    Double hard drive failure!!

I agree, back to basics on this one. to run a disk check, theres a couple of ways, probably the easiest is to go to your my computer, right click the drives in question one at a time, go to properties, then toold, then check now. tick fix file system probs for now. See what happens from there.

    what can i build for 2-300£ ?

quote from the above link: "Of course to meet this price point some sacrifices were made" The motherboard is one area you do not make sacrifices, on a budget, lower the ram or get a cheaper soundcard for the time being, or use old parts, never ever cut back on the board - since the board...

    Double hard drive failure!!

These both on the same IDE channel? could bee a dodgy ide controller or dodgy cable, however once its gone wrong, its much harder to put back as Im sure you realise. Have you tried booting from a cd such as knoppix, bart etc to see if the disk is readable there rather than through windows?

    what can i build for 2-300£ ?

But he wanted a gaming machine, while asrocks are IMO pretty solid boards, they arnt what I'd call high performance, and therefore not the best choice to put in a gaming machine.

Motherboard swap-out,Windows no longer boots from SATA drive

I doubt you used the wrong "F6" disk, if you had, setup would have told you it couldnt find the drive, or you would have blue screened earlier. As for swapping the board, you MIGHT get away with it if its the same chipset, but often a nice blue screen which contains text that is about as...

    Ping....someone explain it to me!

Iggy explained pretty well, do you get the same problem on all servers? is it the same with all games (If you have Halo let me know I'll happily setup a server to test;) ) I suspect first off that the teenager is also downloading either mp3's from maybe a file sharing app (which will definately...

    dvd rrw problems anyone help!!

Dont suppose this will help, but I dont buy the not enough ram theory, I've seen dvd's played on much lower spec pc's Have you tried the new drive on its own? Does it detect properly in bios first off?

Is it a router I want?

A router will do what you want, have apractice on some offcuts first. Like most things, you get what you pay for, I personally hate cheap tools, most of mine are dewalt - but my router isnt! its a £50 special, that said, I do but decent bits for it but one at a time - I only own 3 bits!! Cheap...

Hidden(?) files using 17Gb of disc storage space!

First off, depending on the format you are saving as, 20 odd gig might not be enough anyways. As for the missing space, could be a few things, swap file will take a bit, plenty of system files also, and possibly the cause of most of the confusion is that whatecer program you are using to copy...

    Norton killing my PC

since when was it supposed to stop adaware/spyware? a firewall blocks intruders, antivirus blocks virus's.

In that case, I have no idea :( often theres an option to display the source or whatever, I hope you sort it, theres nothing worse than watching a vid with some stupid box sat at the top of the screen.
