    BS 7671 and the novice

I'd question the ability of a DIY novice to read and fully understand the Regs. Plus, they'd need a good understanding of the building regs as described in the "Electrician's Guide To The Building Regulations". If they could, then "yes" it may be possible. However, they'd still fall short on...

    SWA selection

I was considering that because it also addresses the fuse issue raised further up the thread. As long as I sealed the entry hole to the box I wouldn't break the integrity of the IP rating. Replacing the DNO isolator raises the sticky issue of breaking the seal on the DNO's fuse, although that...

    SWA selection

The :? has confused me. I can't tell whether you're being ironic with your "nice". Is there a better way of doing it? Genuine question, always keen to learn.

    SWA selection

Not if I strip the armour back to fit the gland but leave the inner sleeving on until I need to expose the cores at the isolator.

    SWA selection

The meter's in an IP66 wall box outside the house. I was going to gland to that and put my tails in the DNO's isolator.

    SWA selection

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking in to this a bit more and the rules on using the armour as the earthing conductor are quite tough. The CSA required is higher than provided by the armour so it looks like I'll go with my original plan of using a third core for the earthing conductor...

    SWA selection

Customer has a new meter and isolator installed about 10 meters from his CU. I need to connect the isolator to the CU and will use a length of SWA. I'm leaning towards using 3 core SWA so I can use one of the cores to connect to the MET. However, is there any reason why I couldn't use 2-core...

    Query regarding work carried out

Sounds like you're on the right path to getting this sorted. All you need to do now is make sure that he's a competent person so he can write and sign off your certs. If he's not on the website then you've got a whole load of other problems.

    Extending flex/cable? on light fitting

Please, please, please. STOP NOW!!! Cancel the plasterer and get someone who knows what they're doing to sort you out. You wouldn't dream of doing this with your gas. Electricity done wrong is just as dangerous.

AC Voltage Wire Detectors - A Case for the X-Files?

In that case, be very careful where you stick your drill. There are areas known as "safe zones", which not everyone knows about, that are areas where electrical cables can be run. These are within a horizontal line 150mm down from the ceiling all around each room, 150mm out from each wall...

    Guess the fault

Could it be a nail through the UF heating element when reinstalling the wooden floor and damp under the sink connecting it to the tap? Or, was the CPC used instead of the Line to the UF heating and the Line used for Supp Bonding to the pipework? (or some varation on this) :shock...

Opinions on all RCBOs vs Dual RCD

Whichever way you choose to go, you should make sure that the upstairs and downstairs lighting circuits are protected independantly of each other. You don't want the whole house going dark. Ideally put upstairs ring final with downstairs lights and vice versa. Obviously if you go the all-RCBO...

    plasterer snipped MEB

I bet that same plumber would be quite upset if you, because you couldn't be bothered to do it properly, just cut through one of his pipes and expected him to sort it out.

Wiring for Thermostatic Mixer Shower Pump - Under Bath?

No, you should be fine if that's the extent of the work you plan to do. Check with your electrician that he's happy for you to do this though, just to be sure.

Wiring for Thermostatic Mixer Shower Pump - Under Bath?

No problem with the location as you describe it. However, you're adding a new circuit to a special location (bathroom) which is notifiable to LABC. Your spark won't be able to sign off your work so you need to get LABC involved from the start to monitor and certify the work you do. Much...

    Fused spur vs trailing socket

You can spur from a spur provided that they are both/all protected by a single, appropraitely fused, FCU. In answer to your final question, no it's not illegal. The vast majority of people wouldn't know whether or not their sockets are spurs. It'd be impossible to legislate against them...
