I can't get a sensible answer out of any one!

Does it trip and just leave the red led flashing? If so it could be the PCB - mine did the same thing. Apparently they are well know for this fault. No idea on your install - get some other opinions before you part with your cash.

    Radial - Ring Main

You could just install an FCU on the radial and put the three sockets on the load side They would be limited to 13A but it would solve your problem original problem. Having 2 radials has to be better than one ring. If you convert to a ring you would need to ensure there were no places where...

Yes agreed - I was talking about the provision of only a double socket in a space intended to power two appliances. The question was about the bad design of only providing a double socket. Anyway I’m getting way off topic.

    Short Circuit

PIR - periodic inspection report. So the electrian came before the problem appeared - what was here there to do - just inspecting or to do work? A fault really shouldn't turn cables black. (Ok you drill through one etc it leaves a small burnt area but not a big one.) Loose connections...

    Short Circuit

I'm not sure I follow? However wires shouldn't melt or smoke even under a short circuit condition - the fuse/breaker should stop that. Can you provide more info i.e. How old is the wiring, what type of fuse did if have, how many cables ran into the socket etc etc.

    planned conservatory wiring

I agree with all the negative comments on the plan you originally suggested. So its on to plan B. Part P requires you to give building notice, but that to one side, if the inspector is coming to assess other part of the work he will notice the wiring and will of course want to see that it...

    Installation testing

You could ring him up and ask him for another copy of the cert and test schedule - he should keep a copy.

[/url] Thank you for the information - very informative. So you could get away with 13A as a pessimistic figure in the V.d. calculation – not so bad. It’s very interesting when you consider how many kitchens you see with a washer and dish washer etc off the same double socket. Every seen...

Screwfix (when they are up!!) do a cheap clamp meter for £20. The clamps useful to hang it off your belt. Search for part no 13489.

    planned conservatory wiring

I’m a bit confused by your description – probably me - but can we run through it again. You are building a conservatory onto the back of your house with access via an existing Patio door. Power runs from your garage (attached to the house) in SWA to a security light? (How is the SWA...

    Intermediates and 2 way switches

You need a 2 gang 2 way switch in the middle not an intermediate switch. Your switch should have six terminals (excluding earth) if its got more or less its not correct. The mind boggles at the random combinations you could be getting.

Guys, I'll shut up about V.d. after this - promise! - Agreed disconnection is more important from a safety perspective. B-a-s are you sure about 13A for doubles?? (Trips are always limited by a 13a fuse and singles by design but MK specs rate their doubles at 13a per outlet. i.e. 26a)...

Respectfully, I know its unlikely, but home owners should be consider electrically unskilled operatives and who knows what a spur will be used for in the future. I'm sure none of us would install a spur socket intended to supply a 26A load but there is nothing physically to stop someone later...

how close to gas cooker ?

Common sense applies here – no absolute limits – regs require installations to be appropriate for their environment. In this case I’d ensure sockets don’t get hot, require you to reach across the cooker to operate, flexes cannot catch hot items on the cooker and steam/condensation doesn’t leave...

    Cracked Nut!

I bought olive cutters to speed up installing TRV's. Cannot recommend them enough - beats hacksaws any day of the week, especially in confined spaces.

    - Of course a circle is less Yes you are right I forgot that the current is split, the max value will be based on quarter the ring length. The value will become less as you move towards one end of the ring. At the middle each leg will carry ½ the current ½ the length. Thus Vd will be...

    Power shower

You like to make this complicated:- 1) If the pump is under the bath and behind panels that can only be removed with a tool it is outside the zones. Otherwise you should seriously consider another location. 2) The FCU cannot be located under the bath as you need an accessible method of...

    Cable for storage heaters

Personally I don't think plugs and storage heaters mix. Sockets don't like to be run at a full load for long periods. Rings aren't suitable to high constant loads either. The best option is a radial circuit with short dp switched unfused flex spurs to the heaters. The heater is then fixed...
