    Power shower

No - not off the lights - or off any immersion heater circuit near by either. They mean you use a Fuse Connection Unit (FCU) off your ring with a 5a fuse in it. Is the pump to be located in the bathroom? If so there are lots of other electrical precautions you will need to take...

    spur length

Yep 40m came from a max size perfectly square ring - which must be the shortest length a maximum area ring can be. I agree 26A isn't good for a twin socket, but it is the theoretical max that it could draw - and hence gives a Vd figure. The ring Vd calculation would need to assume 32A if...

    spur length

How long do you want? There are 2 limiting factors:- 1) Volt drop across the cables. You are allowed 4% from the point of origin. (at 230V thats 9V) 2) The fault loop impedance must be low enough for the circuit protection to operate within 0.4s for TN instalations Its hard to...

Electrics idiot needs some help with a simple dimmer switch

The earthing sounds correct. In your case the strapper wire is blue. (Strictly speaking it should be red or marked with red tape - but that to one side for now]. It doesn't really make sense for you to have a cable into L1 and out of L2. A two way switch has 3 connections L1, L2 and C...

    New ceiling rose

When you say you have extra wires - how many did you start with? Have a look at the reference section at the top of the forum. It sounds like you have not connected the loop out from the rose.

Electrics idiot needs some help with a simple dimmer switch

Ok I thing its safe to assume you aren't that familiar with electrics and what started out as a simple job has quickly gone over your head. Can I first clarify what you had before. In your lounge you have two lights, each one was controlled from a single switch in on a two gang face...

DO I need a full rewire

Your Dads suggestion is a good place to start - and you are right another would be the Yellow pages. Its a common misconception that all Sparkys only ever say rewire (like all plumbers are too fat to get under the bath (ok bad example!!) It certainly sounds like your wiring will need...

    dimmer switch problem

Just to double check the dimmer isn't located in the bathroom is it?

Is this a wire wound toroidal transformer or what? (pic)

Looks like one to me. I think TLC sell a dimmer suitable for this type of transformer.

    Bathroom Extractor Fan

I think I've figured out how the old version worked. Supply -> Switch -> Fan Live -> Fan -> Fan Neutral -> Switch Line -> Light _> Neutral. I.e. they are wired in serial. Hence the fan goes off when the light goes off. Does the fan work with no bulb?

    Another Shower Question...

Europe has harmonized on 230v but with a tollerance of + 10% to -6%. This means your supply voltage could be up to 253v. The old UK standard was 240 +/- 6% hence in reality nothing changed very much.

    Halogen Downlighters

You'll probably need to rewire back to the switch. Are the kits 230 or LV?

    Another Shower Question...

Please don't take this the wrong way but ask the sparky doing the connection what he would recommend. If he/she is commissioning the system they will need to sign the test certificate. However I'd go for 50 A MCB 'B' and 63A 30ma RCD.

Advice needed - replacing immersion heater cable.

The most simple arrangement for the immersion circuit would be for a cable to run from a separate way(MCB/Fuse) in the Consumer unit through a 20A DP switch next to the immersion. A heat resistant flex is then run from the switch (flex exit on bottom or front) to the immersion. (An extra DP...

Advice needed - replacing immersion heater cable.

Firstly, you are right the cable should not look like marmite!. Do not use it. You described the cable was like an extension lead flex Does the flex go all the way back to the switch down stairs or is it connected to a cable that goes down? Normally we call round cables to appliances...

    Shaver socket question

No idea what JB1 & 2 are - however If you have a 5A Fuse or 6A breaker on the light circuit using 1mm should not be a problem. There is not much cost differential in using 1.5mm though.

    Shower

If it didn't behave this way when first installed it could be a pump problem. It could also be a faulty sense switch in the pump or crud in the hot pipe. The mixer may only draw hot water at startup (apart from at min setting) and this may not be triggering the pump. The hot sensor may be...

    Shower Down Lighter

I think this site/forum is an excellent way to share and inform people. The problem is a little knowledge is dangerous. But what is more dangerous in my opinion is blind arrogance to think you can do a job in ignorance. When I respond to a posting I always try to phase my answers...

    kitchen sockets under wall cupboards

Are you signing the test certificate? If so ultimately its your say so (and as the customer ... yeh ok forget I said that!) If you tuck them under the wall units you need to be careful the pelmet/worktop lights don't get in the way. Grazed hand on the pelment, burnt by the light, scolded by...
