When you ask a question here it often creates even more questions.
1) What type of down lighter is it? Is is a special bathroom fitting?
2) Is it 230v or ELV (Low voltage).
3) What do you mean by "Mains Units" I'm asusming you mean your Consumer Unit (Fuse Box).
4) Are your fuses the...
If you bend the springs and it stays in when you test changing the bulb then it should be ok. I'd try the test on a swivel chair - it adds to the sense of adventure.
Depends on the fitting. If its got spring arms then it may stay in place (try removing the bulb does the fitting stay in place?). The other issues can be heat - if the fitting is over surrounded by plasterwork - especially if the orginal ceiling was a lathe & plaster with combustible wood...
Second Ban's comments.
If you drilled through one cable of a ring circuit the ring will still work after resetting the fuse - but you will be putting all the load though other ring cable. The fuse is rated to big to protect the single cable and you could be running a real fire risk.
If...
I agree with all the comments here. The real problem is that the jury is still out on exactly what best practice is with regards to mixed installations. If you have 100% metal or 100% plastic the guidance is relatively clear. As the designer (which is what you are) you have to make choices...
If you know the name of the company that installed them and they are NICIEC approved you could try asking them to come back and fix their work. Mention wanting to make a formal complaint etc. should save you the effort of sorting their mess out.
If you have no luck then Choc-blocks will...
Smart asses, but good idea none the less.
Protect sockets & pump with a 30ma RCD (could be split load CU RCD).
Lights would need to be fed off an FCU with 5amp fuse. Pump off another FCU.
There's an over arching requirement that all electrical connections are made inside fireproof enclosures. No unsheathed cables should be exposed outside the enclosures. I'm assuming that the L&N connections in your units are covered ... otherwise they cannot be double insulated. The earths...
If the bulbs are rated at 230v i.e. are real mains halogen lamps then they should be wired in parallel - see the reference section Breezer pointed out by Ban. Wring in series would make them dim and an unusual arrangement.
Who made the lamps / kit? Do they have a technical helpline - it...
Excellent point, however I'm sure Ban would also tell you to do a continuity test. You need to ensure the earth cable goes somewhere. If its not conected in one fitting I guarantee it won't be the only only missing link.
Bottom line never assume - test.
What you are asking for is two way switching - where each switch can turn the lights on or off. I.e. switch on at one switch, switch off at the other. This needs different wiring from the arrangement you currently have. Have a read of the reference section in this forum.
Bottom line -...
Eureka 12v ... 1 Inch wide.
12v halogens derate the dimmer, or put another way -
60VA transformer (per 50w light) give 540VA which is too big for a 450w dimmer (never mind 250w!). I belive the TLC website has a table showing the correct dimmer rating for halogen lights.
Three options come to mind:-
1) Replace with a brand new CU with enough RCD protected ways to support your needs.
2) Add a new 30ma RCD protected CU and split the tails with the existing CU using henry blocks.
3) Try to free up a way in the existing CU to feed a new CU. This will entail...
6,16,32 MCB's are equivalent to the respective 5,15 & 30 Amp rewireable fuses.
Have you considered getting your wiring checked before you buy the MCB's. How old is you installation ? With only four fuses you installation must be small or old.
Green/Yellow stripped cable can only be used as a circuit protective conductor (earth). Any other cable colour can be used provided it is marked with correctly coloured tape or sleeve.
I'm going to correct what I wrote yesterday after thinking about it a bit more - I believe it was misleading/wrong.
Wrong - 416-01 ... isolators in TN installations do not need to isolate the neutral. Neutral isolation is only needed in TT and at the source of a single phase installation...
