    Move switch

And take it all the way to the top of the wall, along near the ceiling (about 3-4cm in) then STRAIGHT down to the switch) Otherwise someone will only go to put something like a clock above the door, and nail straight though it. Idealy, you would take up the floor board upstairds directly...

    Varilight Dimmer

Geez if any of you worked in IT support like me, you would have exploded. Do you know how many calls I get from people who say "my computer's broke" and it either: 1. Isn't on 2. Isn't connected 3. Explained what was wrong in an error msg which they closed and ignored. It's frustrating...

    extending cooker wiring

Run a new cable. No matter what people tell you, or what some DIY shops will sell, there is no substitude for a single cable run of the correct size.

    qualifications required?

Legally you could actualy work with the qualifications you have, and even advertise as a qualified electrician. You would pay FAR more for PL and EL insurance, but it would be impossible to obtain, this is one of the BIGGEST problems with the electrian's world.. every who THINKS they can do...

cable behind wall but how do you do it!!

AH... "oops". Well the there is a problem if the horizonal battens happen to run within the space between where you want the socket, and the top of the wall. Chances are you will have to cut a hole above and below in the wall to feed the cables back thru the already made holes in the...

    MCB Keeps Triping

My thought exactally, and if the washing machine is heating water, plus turning the drum, you have the initial stall current of the motor + heating elements, in addition to kettle which could even be a 4kw disc one, a 2kw heater day, and a d/w (again heating water). Either way you will be...

    Table lamp

It is "ok" providing you use a 5amp socket (and change the plug on the table lamp) to ensure no body unplugs the lamp and wacks a hair driver or worse 2Kw fan heater in!

    Powering attached garage

Providing the garage is reasonabily dry and protected from damp, you can use standard 2.5mm T+E to dorm a new ring into the garage. If there is damp, it would be safer to use an armour cable (fair more expensive) and properly IP rated outlets. You can bring the cable in at any height, unless...

    MCB Keeps Triping

Also, a quick test would be to unplug everything from the ring that is currenty off due to trip MCB, then see if the MCB will re engage with zero load. This isn't a perfect test, but would certainly indicate if a fault condition or an overload condition is most likely. Bare in mind, if the...

    Mutiple lights

If I understand what you asking correctly, you which you have a switch, supplied for an existing junction box, to go on and supply a second junction box which will have a number of lights connected to it. There is no reason you can't do that, but bare in mind: a) you need to bring the...

A few questions - if anybody gets a chance

Sadly I don't find that remotely supprising, and yet he could probably use Maxwell's equations design a perfect electro mag device...... Ah well :) I am an MIEE, and working towards being chartered, so have my qualifications in both areas. They are totally different thou, that is for sure.

    Test meter recommendation

Yup Farnell and pretty good. Although like RS, Rapid, Maplin and so on they can be a bit on the pricey side, as they also sell to Joe Public.

    changing transformer

Ah perhaps I misunderstood sjmyles. It is entirely possible that the outlet of the transfer is effectively connected to two stips of choc-block, giving the impression of multiple outlets, but this is really only for convenience of the installer, and doesn't indicate how many lamps the transfer...

    Metal Dimmer earth question

Well you don't need to earths going into the box as such, but the earth that comes into the box should be screwed to the terminal on the of the box, as should a second short length of nicely sleved earthing to the dimmer switch front. A sort of diasy chain of earths as such.

    Replacing a 2 gang 2 way switch

ERm it makes no odds which colour wire you connect to which terminal, but generally you use COM and L1 if you are using a one way switching circuit, which give the usual down for on, and up for off. Com and L2 would generally give the opposite.

shower ? more like electric water pistol

Could it not be T'ed into the Bath Tap's supply (suspect you would need a 22mm T and a reduced to 15mm for the shower). With the temperature at it's lowest setting you SHOULD be getting near mains pressure from the shower (take the head off to judge the pressure and flow rate easier). If you...

Recessed downlighters into 2-way switching loop.

You mentioned blue, and yet said both DL1 and 2 are fed from 2Core+E (Black and Red typically) Are there 3 core + E wires invloved, and if so, where are they? You should have one from each switch, hopefully going to one of the ceiling roses, plus two twin+E cables (the lighting cirucit)...

    Halogen Delay

Definately. Using the correct terms for items will basically ensure you are treated as trade. Most wholesellers never ask for proof of trading unless you want to open a credit account. You can browse thought RS, Rapid, Farnell or N&E on line to see what you want, and then go to a trade...

    Installing a new consumer Unit

If I have to do it live, I tend to cut the striped end of the tails of using insulated cutters, and then wrap tape over the tail until I am ready to make it off and re fit it. I still treat the cable as live thou, and try to make sure it doesn't as much brush against anything, even plastic! You...
