Insulating a single skin brick wall

Thanks. Is that the one with the SWIP insulation? Looks pretty good but I think the minimum is 65mm thick + plasterboard so really encroaching into that stairwell space. In terms of insulation I need it to be better but it doesn’t have to be amazing. Main concerns are avoiding condensation and...

Air source heat pump vs single room MVHR to combat condensation & mould

Thanks for the reply! I don’t think there’s anything specific like a leak and the only gas appliance is the boiler for which the flue goes directly out through the roof. So I don’t think it’s that! I could just run a dehumidifier as you do your air con unit- but I’m looking for something a...

Insulating a single skin brick wall

Hi all, I need to insulate and plaster a single brick wall that is part of a stairwell up to a loft conversion. 50% of the wall has an unconverted loft on the other side, the other 50% is straight to the elements. Gets bloody cold in the winter. Size is 4.8m x 4.8m - pic attached. How would...

Air source heat pump vs single room MVHR to combat condensation & mould

Hi all, We live in a Victorian semi. Double glazed but otherwise poorly insulated. Centrally heated with a modern loft conversion. We get pretty bad condensation on the middle floor bedroom windows and on the bathroom walls (despite an extractor fan) and this tends to grow mould. Humidity can...

Replace studio corrugated bitumen roof with felt?

Thanks everyone. Did this yesterday. Was a reasonable effort doing it solo! The sheets were slightly long and cutting them down was a total PITA but I muddled through. Goosewing grey as it's the only colour the supplier had that would fit in my car. I think it looks alright. They are only 172cm...

Replace studio corrugated bitumen roof with felt?

Box section steel sounds good. Screws with neoprene or rubber washers right?

Replace studio corrugated bitumen roof with felt?

Thank you. Does the board underneath have to be anything specific? Ie does it have to be 18mm OSB or ply or can it be whatever is there already? Thanks!

Replace studio corrugated bitumen roof with felt?

Hi all, I have a small 4.5 x 3m studio with a pitched roof in my garden. The roof is corrugated bitumen sheets. They have now failed and have started to leak. The roof inside & tongue in groove boards. I need to replace it urgently to address the leak. I've had a quote to replace it with...

Pitched to flat roof ridge ventilation - how to do it?

Thanks. Yes, definitely going to get mushroom vents installed. I've been advised to place them directly over the joists so each one ventilates two gaps. Seems sensible. Agreed that the ridge is wrong. It just looks so unprofessional with all that cement on top and I can't convince myself that...

Pitched to flat roof ridge ventilation - how to do it?

Yeah I almost never turn them on! I probably should have left them out but it seems weird to just not have any ceiling lights at all and pendant lights definitely wouldn't have worked. Thanks - I might add the aluminium tape as well just for good measure. Re ridge tiles - what could I use...

Pitched to flat roof ridge ventilation - how to do it?

This was actually very useful advice. Thank you. I was also thinking that mushroom vents are the most pain free way to go. I did a lot of googling and couldn't find an example of a ridge detail for my type of roof. Thanks. Yeah it is annoying that there is no cross ventilation. Also annoying...

Pitched to flat roof ridge ventilation - how to do it?

Hi all, Really hoping you can help with a problem with the roof of my newly converted loft. I had a torrid time with the build (over budget, overran, had to do loads myself) but it has been generally finished and has been signed off by building control. The loft conversion is a full width flat...

Overboarding lath and plaster ceiling + install new downlights

Fair enough! Thanks. Seems like sanding it down and repainting might be best then as a couple of you have suggested it. With regard to getting the new wiring above the L&P without destroying it - how would you go about this? Thanks again

Overboarding lath and plaster ceiling + install new downlights

Other option is a false ceiling with the wiring in that instead of above the L&P?

Overboarding lath and plaster ceiling + install new downlights

I agree, the idea of exposing everything and re-wiring is appealing. But the mess sounds catastrophic, and as my downstairs floor is open plan it would get absolutely everywhere. That's what put me off. Plus the living room (Without addition of new lights mind), 2 hallways, and potentially 2...

    Picture of ceiling in question!

Overboarding lath and plaster ceiling + install new downlights

Hi all, I live in a Victorian semi with original lath and plaster ceilings. They are a bit discoloured and cracked, but nothing major and still flat. They look tired though and I'm planning to overboard, skim and re-paint them. I've considered pulling them down but the house is fully furnished...

    Loft condensation / ventilation

Just picking up on this again. I installed a bunch more lap vents - there are now 20 up there - and I wedged open the laps nearest the ridge so now there is a path for air to the slates at the apex of the roof. The condensation has lessened, but not gone completely. I've been wondering about...

    Loft condensation / ventilation

Got up there again today to fit some more lap vents and prodded the timbers as suggested. Screwdriver went in about 5mm, wood felt relatively soft on the outside. What finding should make me worry?

    Loft ventilation through eaves/fascia boards

What about what datarebal suggested- fascia off, cut 40mm or so off the top edge, re-fit with fascia vents? You don’t think that would work? Also my understanding is that there still would need to be ventilation between the undersarking and insulation/plasterboard in the loft.
