    I thought a varnish/stain just wont let paint key in well? So I don't need to go down to unfinished wood? Would I need to put a decent primer down beforehand? If thats the case, it might take longer, but I coudl just use my current tool and spend money saved on multiple sanding pads! Q

    Someone has pointed out that this might be a bit overkill and we have an old house. So I will be fitting a light, but another uplight to the wall (stairs lead away from) to light the stair path. This info is very good. Cheers guys! Q
