What are these cables coming through my wall? And what cables do i need?

Freeview is a handy backup system for when satellite TV fails - as it can do for various reasons, including really bad weather. I should add that cable must not be placed directly under carpet that will be stood on - by humans or furniture. Crushing the cable even slightly "out of round" can...

What are these cables coming through my wall? And what cables do i need?

I guarantee that VM don't buy it from the Amazon book store. They will have carried out a cost-benefit analysis based on hundreds of thousands of installations where 10p saved on each one adds up to a significant total amount. They will be using cable, which they have tested at the frequencies...

What are these cables coming through my wall? And what cables do i need?

The specification for RG59 only goes up to 50 MHz so "not up to spec" is meaningless when someone tries to use it for UHF - 450 MHz and higher. Its signal losses are stupendously high, as is the risk of interference - which happens to be greatest close the TV, which is where this stuff usually...

One more point: If the installation is poorly done, you can end up in a situation where you lose the signal in bad weather.

What are these cables coming through my wall? And what cables do i need?

I'd like to point out that RG59 cable is fine for CCTV but really bad for aerial and dish connections, since the cable is only specified up to 50 MHz ! And Lucid already warned about using such cable. Also, do you really want to buy via a bookseller that pays hardly any UK tax and provides zero...

What are these cables coming through my wall? And what cables do i need?

Someone already gave you a link to the SatCure site and that site has a built-in search facility. However, to save your time, here is a direct link to the WF100 page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/WF100_cable.htm#tvf That site also has a technical section with several hundred information pages...

    Bedroom tv

By coincidence, my neighbour has just told me his tale of woe. He changed his TV set and the HDMI signal was no longer recognised. A local shop tested his very expensive 5m HDMI lead and found nothing wrong with it. So they told him to try their cheapo £5 lead and let them know. Of course the...

    New dvd recorder

As I recall, all servicing was free by rental companies. So, to pay for the repair technicians, I reckon it would be a factor of ten, at least. But people preferred rental because many couldn't afford to buy a TV outright and, if they simply bought on Hire Purchase (the "never never"), they...

    Bedroom tv

RF quality is "OK" for a tiny bedroom TV but bear in mind the audio is mono. On the subject of HDMI leads, Lucid, am I right in thinking that some HDMI splitters will amplify the signals so a slightly longer output cable can be used? Also, what max length of cable can be used to connect into...

    New dvd recorder

I was repairing TVs in the 60s at age 15. The majority of faults were "worn out" valves (including the CRT), with a few under-rated resistors for good measure. Nothing difficult. Electrolytic failure was surprisingly rare, in my experience; probably because voltages were high but ripple currents...

    New dvd recorder

Manufacturers are desperate to cut costs to the bone. That's why modern TV reliability is so poor. It's unlikely that any TV with a new design PCB will include any feature that's no longer perceived as necessary unless it's a software-only feature with zero manufacturing cost penalty.

    Mk3 or Mk 4 LNB?

No that wasn't the question and the photos clearly show a Sky minidish. I can't quite make out the detail but the arm looks like an open "C" construction, which makes it a MK4. If you look at the web page (I provided the link) it gives you the relevant details and dimensions so you can check...

    Mk3 or Mk 4 LNB?

It's all explained on this page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm (There are similar pages for the Sky single-output and Octo LNBs.)

    New dvd recorder

I did try, recently, but I only got half way through episode two before I'd had enough. How can anyone watch this violent rubbish and still retain his sanity? It was just awful.

    Aerial Advice

I suggested the "Group A" version because it's shorter (lower wind resistance and easier to handle on a ladder) and because the 1dB difference in gain probably won't matter since the Caradon Hill signal is adequate. Also because, in the near future, the 4G phone band is going down to UHF CH50 so...
