    Mould on the rafters

Caused by poor floor insulation and no loft hatch insulation, so the heat just hit the tiles causing condensation on the tiles and the beams to become wet.

Removing/Replacing Private Shared Water Supply to Terraces

I'm sorry to say that I didn't get around to writing to the water company in the end, as there turned out to be quite a bit of other stuff that needed sorting out with the house. I guess we were just worried about building a conservatory and having to rip it up to allow any pipes to repaired...

Loft Rafters - White Spot Mould + Damp

Hi, I recently moved into an 85 year old house that turned out to have 'White Spot Mould' on the rafters. At first I thought it was Wet Rot from looking at pictures on google, but on inspection by a reputable company I was told it was white spot mould. The rafters are a little soft but on...

AC Voltage Wire Detectors - A Case for the X-Files?

Hi ccrowe, Thanks for the tip. Just out of interest does that rule tend to apply for new builds? Ours is about 85 years old and is an end terrace. I believe the previous owners had alot of the electrics redone in the house in the past 7 years though. They plaster boarded all but two walls...

AC Voltage Wire Detectors - A Case for the X-Files?

thanks hairyben, The next time anything like this comes up I'll use the screwdriver method if I don't trust the detector. As the kitchen door has a small window next to it my wife came up with the idea of using a longer curtain pole that will hold both a short curtain for the window, and a...

AC Voltage Wire Detectors - A Case for the X-Files?

Hi Mattylad, No, nowhere near power lines. Found this post though which is weird and might support the foil backed plasterboard theory though. It certainly made me think twice about chrome light switches as this is something I'd planned to do at some point...

AC Voltage Wire Detectors - A Case for the X-Files?

Thanks for your reply, Do you know what would cause wood to be detected as voltage? Everywhere in the house was plasterboarded by the previous owners so I suspect that some kind of foil backing on the plasterboard might be causing the issue. I've just had a thought, if you have a live...

AC Voltage Wire Detectors - A Case for the X-Files?

Hi, at the risk of sounding like a complete loon...... Went to fit a curtain pole up so we can have a curtain in front of the kitchen door. Used a voltage tester to detect any live wires behind where I need to drill and the detector gave a periodic beep on one side of where I want to drill...

Removing/Replacing Private Shared Water Supply to Terraces

Thanks for that. There dont appear to be any serwer pipes running throught the garden, and the drain is a shared one ajoining the next property. Fortunately , this doesn't cross the garden either. I'll write to them to see what they say and post back here with the info when I get it.

Removing/Replacing Private Shared Water Supply to Terraces

:( Sorry Tony, I misread the site http://www.ofwat.gov.uk/aptrix/ofwat/publish.nsf/Content/ConsIssue_RightsResp_connections_faq02 looks like thats the maximum they can charge for the "infrastructure charge", not the actual supply of the pipe itself, and relates to new properties. Arse...

Removing/Replacing Private Shared Water Supply to Terraces

Thanks, Its a bit of a ball ache really because I would be happy to pay for it to be rerouted via the other end terrace, but I don't think I would legally be able to force the issue. If I were able to have my own supply in, and not be responsible for the old pipe (but still have to grant access)...

Removing/Replacing Private Shared Water Supply to Terraces

Thanks, fortunately they'll only charge £300ish so that should be an issue. Apparently offwat cap what they can charge.

Removing/Replacing Private Shared Water Supply to Terraces

Hi, I have tried to find out some info regarding private shared water supply and was hoping someone here could advise. I would be really grateful. Our property is an end terrace built in 1925 marked with an X in the diagram below As you can see from the diagram , the pipe...
