Ahhh OK, so the tap thermostat on the boiler itself is redundant? And the temperature of the water which runs through the heating loop in the cylinder is determined by the setting of the radiator knob?

As I thought - thanks. The boiler is displaying a solid tap symbol, even with the cylinder thermostat set low, which supposedly indicates a demand for heat - to me this implies the cylinder thermostat is not wired up correctly.

Hello, I've got a system boiler supplying central heating and hot water, via an unvented cylinder. This may seem like a daft question, but if I want to change the temperature of the water then presumably I should do it using the thermostat on the cylinder, and not the water temperature...

The answer to all those is indeed 'yes', so I guess it's wired up correctly just with an odd choice of colours

Hang on, I'm confused now - do you mean swap the wires on the thermostat and do nothing with the other end? I had concluded that the thermostat is wired correctly but that the colours are not ideal in that they have chosen yellow for the live and red for the switched live - am I mistaken?

Ok - I asked because my thermostat is wired exactly as the one in the picture (well sort of - Term 2 is blue, Term 3 is red and Term 1 is yellow). Term 1 is at 230V when the thermo is set to zero, which implies to me that whoever wired it has connected yellow to the programmer's CH ON terminal...

Do you mean that is what it ought to be like if wired correctly, or that is what he would find with it incorrectly wired as shown in the photo?

Presumably, any programmable thermostat that then replaces the wired thermostat then just needs to be wired up as if it were a standard 230V switching thermo connected to a combi boiler, and I don't need to follow the instructions for connection to a Y plan because that is all still taken care...
