    Right angled bath tap

Surely the backflow risk can be dealt with using check valves?

Old water pipes with brass fittings

The pipe on the right with the soldered elbow is obviously copper. With the other two, the first thing to do is clean them off and give them a light rub with some wire wool to see what the pipe material is. I'm almost certain the one on the left is copper, probably imperial 1/2", which can be...

Electrics provision for system boiler and megaflow with immersion heater

Plumbers regularly ask me to provide an unswitched single socket for a boiler supply and, around here at least, you see it very frequently for boiler installs old and new. To me, it's obviously a convention that has been around for a long time. Personally, I don't have any preference - as long...

Electrics provision for system boiler and megaflow with immersion heater

Sorry for late reply, been a long day. Vaillant is the one I've come across - e.g. page 9 in this link (15Mb download) 'Isolation is preferably by the use of a fused three pin plug and unswitched shuttered socket outlet, both complying with the requirements of BS 1363. Alternatively, a 3 Amp...

Electrics provision for system boiler and megaflow with immersion heater

Coming late to this but seeing as you've already laid the two 2.5s, what I would do is this - change your ring circuit design to two radial circuits both on 16A MCBs (assuming you have another free way in the CU), one for the immersion via a 20A switch and the other for your double socket plus...

    Appliance fuses

The vast bulk of kettles on sale have ratings between 2200 and 3000w. Can't recall ever seeing a mainstream 1800w kettle, not in recent years anyway.

Wylex New Style Metal Consumer Units.

I much prefer the MK solution of parking all the neutrals in the high integrity terminal block and then distributing out to the individual RCDs. It would be great if there were a viable way of doing that with the line conductors without the risk of some idiot connecting a circuit straight into...

    Electrics in the US?

Whenever I see American MCBs and RCBOs they remind me of the Crabtree C50s of the 1970s - far bulkier and better built than what we have now in Europe. What is the quality like?

Worlds most dangerous Portable Water Heater!

Good sockets those were! But how do you screw it to the backbox??

Is it legal to have a light switch in front of copper pipes...

No. I really don't believe it's acceptable to box 240v mains cable in with heating pipes under any circumstances. Without going to get the Big Book out, I'm pretty sure the relevant regulation specifies a minimum distance of 25mm between mains cables and metallic services (50mm for gas)...

    Police Interceptors 09/11/15

True, but they're far from being the only ones to use dumbed down tabloidese to sensationalise any possible situation.

    Police Interceptors 09/11/15

(referring to the meter having been removed and car battery jump leads used to bridge the tails) "The current going into the property could easily surge and start a fire". Why do these media f***wits have an obsession about everything that goes wrong with electricity being a 'power surge'?? I...

Please recommend a bathroom fan that will help with condensation in flat

I've had great success with one of these in a house which previously suffered chronic damp due to a variety of factors. We tried loads of different things and this finally fixed (masked?) the problem very successfully. It has to go in the loft though and is quite expensive...

What kind of incoming electrical connections are these?

Only thing I can see is missing so far going down the three x 1 phase CU/submain route is a single point of isolation after the meter, which is easily achieved with one of these. Other than that I'd prefer having the three phases as separate supplies - as already stated it means you can perform...

    Transformer fire?

What happened here then? Doesn't look to me like the transformer is on fire, unless they're referring to the whole structure as a transformer. Phase to earth fault and the protection didn't operate...

2.5mm twin & earth cable - round vs flat

Yeah, the local one around here is that he made the first transmission over open sea, from Lavernock Point on the Welsh side to Brean Down on the English side. It was all progress by increments really, rather than one big huge breakthrough.

2.5mm twin & earth cable - round vs flat

I wonder if the OP is not local, i.e. from a jurisdiction where round fixed wiring cable is in common use, and is therefore thinking of that. http://www.screwfix.de/mantelleitung-nym-j-3x2-5-50m-grau.html

    When was it 440 volt?

Isn't it because that's traditionally near as dammit the highest tapping for the no-load voltage on standard distribution transformers? Certainly around here (Swansea) that's what Western Power and formerly South Wales Electricity seem to have done - its quite common to see no-load single...

Solid red light on electricity meter?

Its quite normal - a solid red light means no power was being drawn at that particular moment, or at least such a minute amount that it wasn't enough to register. If you wait around long enough for the fridge compressor to kick in, you'll see it change from solid red to a (very slow) blink...
