    Leaking new shower door

I fitted one similar at our last house. The seal needs trimming at the hinge to fit closely around it. Can’t post a pic of ours as we moved out last December. It was VP but a small corner bath so didn’t get the worst of the shower but it didn’t leak. Seal was replaced after 2 years as it...

Toilet not flushing well, may be syphonic

I have seen siphonic pans before but not had to take one apart. Parents and grandparents (as a six year old theirs fascinated me) have had them and these behave in exactly the same way. When flushed the pan fills slowly and a swirl is generated as the pan contents disappear, at the end of the...

Toilet not flushing well, may be syphonic

Got a bit further and took the cistern off, no bomb! Would that explain why it sometimes doesn’t flush? There is also no hole for the bomb to feed - if I ever find the guy that boxed it in………… there is about 20mm between the tiles and the bottom of the cistern. Do I just replace the big...

Toilet not flushing well, may be syphonic

Just moved into a 1980s house which has three of these. One is playing up and helpfully is tiled in so not sure if I can get the cistern off. Doesn’t seem to be related to pan contents but are parts still available - it is marked Ideal Standard.

Insulating Eaves of a loft conversion - Have I messed up?

You really want to insulate the vertical and horizontal surfaces (and door) leaving the space ventilated. Anything else risks damp issues in future.

Does anyone know what this strange loft window is?

Wonder if they wanted a balcony window but planning said no after work had started.

Staircase Glass balustrade fitting - need some advice!

I presume the glass continues beyond the point where the rail meets the ceiling (if it doesn’t there will be a gap) so you will need to continue the rail along the ceiling to house those glass panels. This means you need something like a 135 degree joint in the rail, then fixing it to the...

    Coving lighting – regs compliant?

Use strips of plasterboard to pack out the coving. Can’t comment on the light question.

Two shaver sockets in same bathroom

My assumption was that you can hold one side to earth potential for the first socket but does the same apply to the second? Yes, you would have to be stupid to do it but I have seen some stupid things.

Two shaver sockets in same bathroom

A question for the learned members - just been reading something and it raised a question about having two "shaver" sockets in the same bathroom. Of course the question would be "why do it". Example - You can now get heated mirror lights many of which include shaver sockets (we had one and...

Creda Europa not turning on - blast from the past

Moved into a house last week and cooker has been working fine but today neither oven will turn on. It is a Creda Europa, no idea of model but has a mechanical clock. It has power as the oven light comes on and the grill works. May be on auto but how do I get it off auto if it is?

    Tank thermostat tripping

Fitted a new thermostat Saturday and the new one is working. Was a little suspicious that there was no click or resistance from the old one when I turned the temperature dial but the water didn’t seem inordinately hot either. Now I know it was the star will take it apart and have a look...

    Laminate on stairs

After several months, a house move (ours not hers) and a number of other events it is done apart from a strip of sealant inside the front door. MDF screwed to risers to avoid removing the tread radius and laminate glued down with Screwfix best grab adhesive. Aluminium strips came from B&Q...

Filling gap above door lining on block wall

A big piece of timber may expand/contract. I would put a frame in the gap and plasterboard it before plastering.
