Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

I had a chimney sweep inspect the room, he suggested that the smell was coming in through the flue and that due to the age of the houses (approx 130 years old) the mortar would have perished in a few places. I spoke to the neighbours and the don't have any gas appliances venting carbon monoxide...

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

The joists run parallel to the party wall as opposed to into it.

    I'll bear that in mind.

That sounds like it might work. What would be involved?

    Temporary Cellar Renovation

OK thanks. I might just put some industrial shelving in there for now then :)

    Temporary Cellar Renovation

My Victorian terrace has a large cellar that, while not liveable, is pretty dry and doesn't smell. Long-term, I'd like to convert it into liveable space but we don't need the extra room right now and it'd be expensive to do as it might involve lowering the floors. I'm 6'3" and can stand up in...

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

Yeah, I'm coming to that realisation. Any good guides on where to start dismantling the fitted wardrobes without totally wrecking them.

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

It's a big job...we have sprung wooden floorboards and fitted wardrobes to work around. One of the members on here suggested that the onus was on the neighbours to stop the smell getting into our house rather than the other way around.

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

My mate's a copper. I'll ask him if this is worthwhile. Afraid not. Sniffing around in the corner of the bedroom like a bloodhound revealed exactly where the smell is getting in after sealing up the holes at the top and bottom of the wardrobe. As has been pointed out, I think the smell is...

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

I explained to the council I was hesitant to approach them to start with due to the heavy drinking and wanted to know what my options were. As far as I'm aware they aren't growing anything. The dealer turns up every other day in his 18-plate BMW and his tracksuit.

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

Quick update, I spoke with the council and they put me onto the Community Welfare Officer the next day, who visited last week to complete a risk assessment. Either the local council are incredibly efficient or the couple and their address are known. I filled the holes at the top and bottom of...

Lath & Plaster Attic Room Renovation

It's a 130-year old house so there is no felt as far as I'm aware, just roofing slates mounted to the rafters like this: https://www.sprayfoaminsulation.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/No-Felt.jpg So the plan would be: Rip out the plaster Rip out the laths 100mm foam board between the rafters...

Lath & Plaster Attic Room Renovation

Fantastic, I'll give that a go. Regarding insulation, I can't remember the exact spec for insulation but I think I need something like 100mm between the rafters a 50mm gap and then 50mm running in the other direction to bring it up to modern building standards. Does that sound right? The...

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

Yeah, I might try speaking to them first then but they are both drinkers (one of them doesn't leave the house) so I don't know how far I'll get with that.

Lath & Plaster Attic Room Renovation

One thing that would be handy is a rubbish chute that I could hang from the window so that we could just hoof **** straight from the attic room into a Hippobag in the front garden. Something like this: https://heatherednest.com/diy-garbage-chute-trash-chute-from-concrete-forms/ Any suggestions?

Lath & Plaster Attic Room Renovation

OK, you've inspired me. I'll recruit some friends and aim to get the job done over a couple of weekends once the weather gets warmer as I imagine the attic will be pretty chilly without anything other than slate keeping the heat in!

Lath & Plaster Attic Room Renovation

Best to clear the entire room before attempting this then? Dust sheets no good for the job?

Smoke/Weed Smell Coming Through Chimney Breast

Right, so the best way of doing that would be to remove the bottom of the wardrobes from within and then try to access the area of the floor beneath them?

Lath & Plaster Attic Room Renovation

I want to pull the walls and ceiling down, remove the laths, install insulated board and then plasterboard over the top. I'd be happy to get a plasterer in for the last boarding/skimming as it's not something I can do myself.

Rewiring Hallway Lights in Victorian Terrace

Yeah, I'm going to give this a shot as I think it's exactly what's needed. Thanks for sharing the actual item you're recommending.
