    My Roofing Project - NOVICE ALERT

    Avoid nailing past the weather bars on the gutter. Double hole your slate on either the left or right hand side and fix it like that. If done properly the slates shouldn't dive up at all. Fairly simple.

    Advice on lead flashing on new extension

    Rip that off and start again, cutting of tiles is appalling, broken tiles/cuts missing, lead work (oh dear) mortar work awful.

    If its a small terrace, up and over plus a wing, then £2800 is similar to what i charge for a re-roof.

    Any tips on how to syphon petrol from a car?

    Life the back seats, remove the screw on access hole to the tank, and syphon from there. Ive done this on many vauxhalls, seriously easy. Get a jiggle syphon.

    Valley question

    I've lost count of the amount of GRP valleys my firm has replaced, lead will always win this argument for me. At present we are re-roofing a 20 year old house with 6 dormers, every single GRP valley has been leaking like mad. Albeit the roof was done awfully bad and at the incorrect gauge...

    Fibre cement soffit strips as mentioned above.. but for gods sake DO NOT copy the overhang on that picture :/ wind would rip that off

    Nail every 3rd course, and the end 2 rows at each verge (both rows all the way up)

    The felt will never really rot but it does tend to curl up. I always use 450mm DPC at eaves, then felt to the fascia. Eaves trays are crap.
