    foundations problem / advice please

evenin, I'm building a porch about 2m x 2.1m and have dug the trenches for the foundations - we're at a depth of more than 2m as the BCO wanted us to go to same depth as the house foundations. Problem is we've uncovered a main foul water drain which has been encased in a large amount of...

    Clear glass in bathroom window?

Agreed also, and I reckon my solution is good on the light admittance as well. Noseall - you were kind enough to reply to me yesterday on the building thread about my drains http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1726487#1726487 I've posted another picture and a new query - would...

    Clear glass in bathroom window?

I specified clear glass in my bathroom windows even though they are at the front of the house. Two reasons for this .... 1. I hate not being able to see outside, especially in winter when the windows are always closed 2. I hate the look of some of that swirly obscure glass It was...

    moving / extending drains

hugh jaleak, thanks for the reply. I'd rather avoid a major re-routing - my neighbours did this same porch project and they ended up removing a mega amount of ground to sort out the drains. If the BCO is happy with me removing the s-bend and coupling back into that pipe from the new gully...

    moving / extending drains

thank you noseall. Not sure exactly where it goes but it seems to be aiming diagonally across that photograph. Off to the right out of picture are a couple of manhole covers so I assume it connects into the main drain somewhere in that region. From what you say I reckon I can save some...

    moving / extending drains

morning all, just doing a bit of light digging in preparation for a new porch. I need to reposition a rainwater downpipe - please see attached photo. After that s-trap thingy the drain looks like it goes off deep into the ground. I had anticipated having to dig down to intercept it somewhere...

wood burner flue through flat roof

done it! have now got some neat upstands around the flue area. Means I can cut away the deck within this area as much as I need to. Main benefit is that I can tell the roofers to finish off and I can get the flue fitted later. Will finish off in lead somehow and BCO will be happy - no timber...

wood burner flue through flat roof

thanks big-all but I'm up to speed on the clearance requirements. It's a twin-wall flue, 6" inner and 1" insulation to give a 200mm finished flue diameter. The manufacturer specifies the clearance requirement as 50mm which is fairly standard for twin-wall I think. The bigger clearances you...

wood burner flue through flat roof

afternoon all, hope some of you folks can advise me on this (sorry it's a bit long). I have a flat roof currently being constructed - the bottom layer of felt has been torched on to give me some basic waterproofing and the roofers are due back soon to finish the job. I'm installing a wood...

    Extractor Fan - Utility Room

OK, thanks for the replies. So I think the simplest thing is to bung in a 2 pole isolator switch and then use a single pole pullcord to switch it on/off. Just one final question, whats the recommended order of components ..... is it supply--isolator--on/off switch -- fan or...

    Extractor Fan - Utility Room

evening all, my sparky is booked for two weeks time but he's currently on holiday so I can't get him to advise on this. Myself and the builder need to get on with boarding and skimming a stud wall tomorrow but I know we're going to need some wiring for an extractor fan in there. It's a utility...

    flue / flat roof problem

OK, so my plumber has had a look today and he believes there is no solution that avoids moving the flue outlet from my neighbour's boiler. Whether we achieve that by moving the existing boiler or fitting a new one remains to be seen. He reckons that as long as we have solution in hand the BCO...

    flue / flat roof problem

thanks 1canhelp, some good detailed info there. My plumber is back from holiday soon so I will ask him what he can find by way of parts - I am not optimistic however. I think raising the boiler, or at least the position of the outlet, may be possible. I've looked at my own flue position on...

    flue / flat roof problem

interesting, thanks everyone. Good to get a legal perspective on things, even though I am pretty sure we won't need to go that route. Just for info, my particular road is about 7 or 8 houses that the estate agents describe as 'link detached'. I'm sure you know the form .... main body of...

    flue / flat roof problem

1canhelp, thank you. I've discussed raising the boiler with my neighbour - it may be an option. When you say non-condensing flues should fall away from the boiler, what about ones that were designed with a vertical flue option? I assume the same requirement about avoiding water on the heat...
