    Valley question

We do work for a developer who will only specify dry GRP valleys specifically because they don't get bunged up with tree debris and they do work really well and look very neat

Damaged felt under slates. replace or forget?

The felt really only stops dust when in place (and wind blown snow) but yes does work as a temporary weathering during construction

Damaged felt under slates. replace or forget?

It's the slates that keep the water out not the felt. If you do a forum search for `no felt' you will find loads of posts regarding this issue and they all say the same thing, don't worry about it.

Could this vent tile be letting in rain?

It looks to me like too large a slate vent has been used, there should be another course of slates at the head notched around the grill

    Capillary problem with tiled roof

If you have a smart phone download an inclinometer (free ones available), hold it against the verge and you will be given the pitch of the roof For info, minimum pitch for Moderns is:- 22.5° Smooth (75mm headlap) 17.5° Smooth (100mm headlap) 30° Granular (75mm headlap) 25° Granular...

Are these available in the UK?

Slate nails aren't designed to take the weight of a person, no way would I trust even a new one to take my weight let alone one that may have deteriorated over time

Are these available in the UK?

You could look at Klober Trapac hooks, they are compatible with slates http://www.klober.co.uk/

    Concrete Roof Tiles

To be absolutely sure you could get a fixing spec from Marley which (unless you have a pitch of 45 degrees or over) will likely say nail at all perimeters or if more generally local areas nailed (through the RH nailhole), local area are defined as 15% of the roof measured from all perimeters...

Boiler flue thru tiled roof w only MASTIC around!!!??

A pipe-weathering slate, as the name suggests, is made specifically for this purpose, most used nowadays are flex-slates which have a rubber collar welded to the weathering slate base which is cut to suit the pipe size. A lead flashing in the traditional sense is a weathering to vertical...

    Neighbours new roof.

It will only tie-in if you both have the same slates on each roof, there may be a secret bonding gutter at the party wall

Marley Mendip Pewter Red roof tiles

Pewter Red wasn't around for very long at all (can't even remember what the colour looked like), it is therefore unlikely you will find any anywhere as it was probably made to order anyway. if it was a lustourous colour then maybe worth looking at a Redland Landmark Double Pantile

    Cambrian tile

Every slate should be fixed, yes they are a git to replace as you basically have to break the slate. Redlands do a repair kit for replacing Cambrians but IIRC it is basically a clip and stick system (this is where Britlock and even melborne slates are better as they have less fixings)

These photos show eaves tray? Sorry photos inserted now!

There should be underlay support trays or at least 5U eaves sheet installed, looking at that photo I can't see any. If you look up between the fascia and the gutter and can see the felt then you have not got either. It is true that the felt may deteriorate over time but it will be quite a...

    My quotes...

We actually have a couple of guys who do a lot more than roofing (carpentry, plastering, building etc) BUT are VERY good at all of them (can just about put together an Ikea wardrobe myself lol), some guys are just good at practical things, it seems to be that roofers can make good builders but...

    My quotes...

Blimey, you got a lot of estimates, though some of them make my quotes look like war and peace in comparison lol Don't like the use of the word estimate this gives the impression of uncertainty, a fixed price quote is always better than an estimate. Ask for references and speak to previous...

Is it bad flashing or bad bricks?

You have a tile fillet not a flashing from what I can make out. Tile fillets crack after a while and will let water penetrate behind the soakers (assuming you have them). Put a proper flashing there and check to see if you have soakers, if not have them installed too. Be good practice whilst...

    What to do about verges

If they are Marley tiles you could use their refurbishment dry verge kit (may work with other manufacturers tiles but wouldn't guarantee it), this extends the batten to create a fixing point so barge and soffit shouldn't be disturbed

slate roof photo - how long will it last?

Your options are - read the bits I`ve edited - have a drink and repeat after me " many roofers are P*keys" I`m allowed to say that cuz I`m a pi*ey plumber - and us plumbers use to do gutters - until the roofers took that job  . Chill , save your money and sell when you`re...

slate roof photo - how long will it last?

No, leave well alone. When it reaches the end of its life (ie when the nails have corroded) it will need replacing. If it ain't broke don't fix it
