untidy gap where soffit meets wall

Rather than just a squirt of mastic (which to be honest would prob be normal), how about some strip sealant (though wouldn't be too easy)

    Re Roofing in sections

Re-roofing area of slate like that is not cost effective and not easy as the slates are generally fixed in a diagonal line to allow proper fixing so your later idea of front then rear elevation is best, bear in mind of course that you will require scaffold whichever way you do it so costs would...

What's the best way to get rid of seagulls?

Ditto to above, apparently the owl really does work

    cscs cards

No he can't, the certification is for your son not his former employer, can he not get replacements (not that he should have to of course)?

    treating moss on roof

Moss killer sprayed should kill it yes There are millions of roofs covered in moss it shouldn't damage the felt below

    Leak in box gutter

Are you sure it's a tear in the lead, the snow will fill the box gutter quite quickly and leak over the upstands

    treating moss on roof

TBH that's not a lot of moss at all really. A stiff broom should shift a good deal of it as long as you can get to it safely and if you are worried about it blocking the gutter get a `Gutter Hedgehog' which are inexpensive and easy to fit

Concrete vs Lead flashing - advice needed

Cement fillets will always fail over time and should be replaced with lead flashings (and soakers if it is a slate or plain tile roof)

Roofing Q - -Work is in progress - is this right?

Blimey! 2 fewer courses on your neighbours roof means they must only just lapping, that's over 2 foot different in combined gauge! My earlier deleted post was a repeat of others about the headlap.

Also bear in mind should you be NHBC registered the ridges and any hip ridge now have to be mech fixed instead of / as well as bedded

    roofing advice

+1 for FMT And be aware that with new build the ridge vent system will be very useful to get rid of the moisture trapped in the building materials, mortar, plaster etc.

3yr old roof leaking around chimney

Agree with Woody that you may be being fobbed off but would also say that chimney's do leak (sort of) if the brickwork is old and no damp proof course is present (age of building points to this) they can get saturated and show water ingress further down. But in this instance it does sound...

RDave, I can see these three threads being moderated quite soon as you seem to be advertising

Old Hardro Slates - sales tactic?

Catlad, it is somewhat accurate to call them slates as that is what Anchor / Forticrete have always called them, they are laid the same way as slates and have no nibs (hung on the battens with the nail). The actual warranty period for the slates is 30 years but they should last a damn sight...

Old Hardro Slates - sales tactic?

Neighbour completely tucked up there No way would there be any issue with them if they are not broken and local trading officers should be contacted to make them aware of who is carrying out this sharp practice!

What to consider when selecting a roofer?

Plenty of family roofers are not VAT registered as they do not meet the tax threshold

tile cuts on a gable end wall

I take it you mean a raking top edge rather than an angle. If you have a main pitch down to 22.5 degrees a Winchester cut will work but will need 2 gables per course at the rake if the pitch is too low or you could do what I think I correctly remember as a Sussex cut where you run a couple of...

is this roof a pukka job?

We've done a bit of EPDM and it seems to work ok for us, mind you that's using skilled operatives who know how to detail, the only bugger is the weight of the stuff when you buy it cut to fit and it isn't a small roof, would need a bleedin crane for the 1000sqft roll!

    Shallow roof

Gets even worse as 03 Antique Red (concrete not clay) is granular, water is going to pee in with only the felt keeping the rain out (for now) The builder should stand the cost as the roof is not fit for purpose. There are very few options available for that pitch of roof with tiles, in...
