    Shower wall of lath-and-plaster

no easy out here. had exactly the same situation. i didn't trust my 100 year old lath and plaster to hold up my travertine. I screwed waterproof plasterboard onto the existing studs. then tiled on top of that. had to put a double bead edging around the shower but it looks ok.

    Repairing Bay Window Columns

if he's going to put a hardstand around your house make sure he digs out what is already there first. If you raise the ground level you'll have a chance of damp internal walls. So you want the finished surface including tiles no higher than it is at the moment. Modern plaster is ok for the...

    Repairing Bay Window Columns

I would try and keep them if at all possible. Modern replacements will likely be of inferior quality.... if you can get them. I would be surprised if the window cills are cement. more likely to be either natural stone or lime based stucco. These are more than 100 years old. Some degradation...

    Chimney stack repair or rebuild?

first off, if you're repointing your stack i hope that you're using a lime based mortar. Cerement based pointing will likely exacerbate the spalling you are experiencing and may even be the cause of it. I would counsel against sealing your brickwork as you would be likely to trap moisture behing...
