    Bedding for patio

You didn't say what type of paving you are planning to use but I guess like the rest of the world it will be Indian sandstone. Nowadays most people use a cad package to generate a random pattern instead of lumping stones all over the place. If the patio is for foot traffic only you can use a...

Cavity Wall Insulation - some advice, please?

Cleaning out a cavity can be time consuming and tedious. It is not always successful. If you have solidified mortar down there you will not be able to shift it with a piece of wood, iron bar or any other normal means. The only way that I have found to break up solidified mortar is to use a .410...

    Rat problem

Rats are thirsty animals and need water (probably why they like sewers) The best bait for to trap them, believe it or not is Potato! as it satisfies the water and sustenance requirements. Forget the traps from B&Q get yourself a Fenn MK VI.

    Bordering garden with sleepers.

Most sleeper retaining walls are built using vertical sleepers cut to size and cemented into the ground. It is normal to have 1/3 in the ground. Like this one I did last month… Sounds like you are trying to build a retaining wall using the full length of the sleepers horizontally? I think...

    drainage and soakway

How deep does the clay subsoil go? You might be able to bore through it and find a permeable layer lower down. The distance a soakaway has to be from a building is indeed 5m. If you build one closer all you will do is force water into the foundations of your house and quite likely up under your...

Can you pierce the main drain when gardening?

yes it is. And you'd know by looking If it's plastic you can fix with a collar or maybe some denso tape. Whatever you do do not leave it. if it's breached, it can fill up with soil and block = headache.

Limestone Mantel-How Do I Secure The Metal Fixing Brackets?

If this a 'real' limestone fireplace then there should be no problem drilling into the head. Just don't drill too close to the edge and use a sensible sized drill. It sounds a bit strange to me that the legs are hollow. This would indicate that you might have a "composite" stone fireplace and I...

Limestone Mantel-How Do I Secure The Metal Fixing Brackets?

When I installed my fireplace I drilled and rawpluged the brackets to the limestone fireplace head. You can use tile cement to secure the fireplace to the wall as well. Kind of belt and braces but I didn't want to take the risk of the fireplace falling down.. it's dam heavy and I have small kids.

    2 wire room stat

There are three terminals on the rear of the stat. Neutral, live and switched live. However I do remeber that the instructions I had (before my wife filed them) said that the controller required that a neutral be connected. I guess that as I only have 2 wires and three terminals, maybe this stat...
