Replacement windows, should installer fit cavity closers as standard?

Hi all, We're thinking to replace1980's DG 50mm alu windows in 1960s house with 70mm uPVC, should installer fit cavity closers as part of the process whether there are closers already there or not? House was likely not built with closers but could have been retrofitted when windows were done in...

    Outside tap fix

Ha can't even release the nut to get to the washer or the nut for the tap itself. Guess I shouldn't be surprised being outside for years. Think it's plumber time

    Outside tap fix

Thanks for point that out, I didn't know that was a requirement. Will probably get it all replaced when we get the kitchen done which hopefully won't be too long but ideally need this to work over the summer at least. So will try the washer.

Ah yes good point. Is this likely to be the washer? Assuming I can unscrew it in the first place...

    Outside tap fix

Hi all, Our outside tap is leaking, initially it was just a drip but then after running and closing it off lots of water was gushing out still. Luckily have a stopcock for it inside so have isolated there (see attached pics). Easiest thing to do would be replace just the tap outside which is...

Renew or replace external tiled window sills

Sorry got one more question. I think the uPVC windows will come with a stub sill 95mm? Similar I assume to what the old windows have. There's no logic in having a longer sill fitted 150 or 180mm? Then the tiles could be removed. This would leave a gap from the ledge/reveal up to the underside of...

Renew or replace external tiled window sills

Ok thanks for your suggestions. Based on what you said it would be something like the image below? Assuming the tiles had been cut back a bit then the capping put on with the lip of it to cover the open end of the tiles? Ideally the lip would cover the whole open end of the two layers of tiles...

Renew or replace external tiled window sills

Yes you may be right, the internal sill looks a bit higher so maybe thats possible that there is one row of bricks lower on the outside. As you say dropping the window seems like a lot of work. Surely the tiles could just be removed and something equivalent put in or maybe replaced with...

Renew or replace external tiled window sills

It varies by window but the windows are recessed back in the reveal from 70-110mm and the tiles protrude about the same amount beyond the wall. I guess they are performing the purpose of a cill to protect the lower reveal and wall from water

Renew or replace external tiled window sills

I can maybe ask. I asked about renovating the tiles but they said that wasn't their thing. I think the pvc windows come with mini sills/lip built in? But would need a deeper one to go below if the tiles came out. To be honest I don't mind them but they do need some maintenance now and again...

Renew or replace external tiled window sills

Hi all, we're getting our windows replaced and wondering what to do about the tiled sills below the windows. Some are not in great condition and also worried they will be dislodged by the window fitters but they themselves say they cannot renew or replace them. What trade would be best to...

    Eaves access advice

Well the first floor rooms are completely enclosed by the roof, I've always called it the eaves but yes it doesn't project out beyond the outer wall so I guess it is the roof void. Good to get the correct lingo though. Ok interesting to know it's not uncommon. Thanks

    Eaves access advice

Hi all, I'm looking for opinions on whether people think that an eaves needs to be accessible? Currently we have quite a large door 1.2x0.6m approx in a bedroom to one eaves but no access at all on the opposite eave. The eaves in the house are quite large maybe 8x1.5x1.5m (highest point of...

Anyone converted a cold pitched roof to warm?

Yes that's a good point. I should have said it does need a rewire too so holes will be getting punched in the plasterboard etc

Anyone converted a cold pitched roof to warm?

Yeah it's detached. Technically the rooms in the roof need renovating but mostly cosmetic. The plasterboard walls/ceiling that make up the rooms are in ok condition so would be mostly decorating. One caveat is the lack of insulation on the plasterboard walls, if this needed doing it's a bigger...

Anyone converted a cold pitched roof to warm?

Ok, can you elaborate? Is it practical for existing housing stock to convert to warm roof? It doesn't seem common place.
