Just to confirm, this is definitely a cooker connection point you've got? IE, supplied by a 30 amp fuse or breaker? Also, i don't know what size cable you should use but i'm guessing bigger than 4mm!

What make is the unit? Some manufacturers give a 2yr warranty.

The fishy smell will be something burning, check the switch connections and connections in the shower itself.

What make did you go for then? Bosch is one of the better makes...

hahah. Hoover, Ariston and Tricity Bendix are possibly the worst machines! Bosch are among the best, you may see more complaints, but the machines are older.

I intended to, believe me, but, with the cable being so badly burnt, i had no choice but to get another one of the Wickes sockets, reason being, the spacing of the terminals is unique, and i only had enough slack cable to do that!

that's actually a good point, but, if that were the case, wouldn't the plug have burnt and not the socket?

The connections were perfect when the socket were installed (at least nine years ago!). Oh well, you win some you lose some.
